Confused, please help

Can someone who has the equipment (or intimate knowledge thereof) tell me:

I understand that two lines are required AT the DVR (so two channels can be recorded at once).

BUT, do I have to run two lines to the DVR (from the dish) with an outlet at the wall (said outlet have two RG-6 connections)?

OR, can I run one line to the DVR (from the dish) with an outlet at the wall and use this multi-switch Zinwell thingy I keep reading about (said outlet having only one RG-6 connection)?

I guess I am basically trying to determine if I have to run another line to each of my TV locations (only have one line to each TV as of now). I need to do this prior to setting up an install so I can be the drilling holes in my floors and walls.

Thanks!

You need 2 lines from dish or multi-switch to the DVR for "full funcionality"! of course if you use the multi-switch, you need 4 lines from the dish to the multi switch! It will work with one line to DVR, but you can only, watch a chnl, record a chnl or watch what you're recording!

I guess I do not understand the purpose of the multi switch.

If I am to get the AT9, 5 LNB dish that has 4 lines coming from it (I assume), then I should just run the 4 RG-6 lines from the dish, splitting the four-line run into 2 two-line runs, each going to its respective TV (with no multi-switch needed).

I was kind of thinking that if I already have one run of RG-6 cable to each TV, then I would just put a splitter (multi-switch?) at the wall outlet and the result would be two lines to the DVR. Apparently, that is not correct.

Or, is it that each separate RG-6 run of cable is carrying different satellites, hence the need for two physically separate runs of cable?

Sorry, still confused. I guess I just need to know the basic install setup for the cable runs between each piece of equipment. I have downloaded the DVR Plus manual and will check that tonight to see if it shows how to set up.

Thanks!

Anyone else know?

You can not split signal from the dish! If you need more than 4 conections, you need to instal the multi-switch which would give you 8 inputs! Only the zinwell multi switch is comp with the AT9 at this time!

D* rcvrs get the correct signal from the dish for the channel you select by varying vltgs to the LNB! Thats why you "switch" and not "split"! the multi=switch has all of the signals avlbl for the amount of outputs yhe switch has! Hope this has cleared this up somewhat for you!
Yes, you could just use the lines from the LNB if you only needed 4 lines. The switch does allow you to expand in the future if you wanted to add additional units.

Does that make any sense?

Isn't it 6 inputs and eight outputs? Here is a good photo of the 6x8 for anybody who wants to see what it looks like.

Yes, it has 6 inputs, but it's the 4 sat inputs that are used at this time!
Bottom line is, you need two or more cables to your DVR location.

If you use a multiswitch, you need all 4 lines connected between the dish and the multiswitch. This means that you cannot put the multiswitch at the end of a single (or even dual) coax run - it will only work properly with all 4 input lines connected.

So you either need to (a) run two lines from each dvr location to the dish, or (b) select a location that is convenient for the multiswitch, then run four lines from the dish to the multiswitch, and then run two lines from the multiswitch to each DVR. If you think you will ever want more than two TV locations, or more accurately if you think you will ever want more than four coax lines hooked up at one time, then you should put the multiswitch in now and run all of your wiring to the multiswitch location.

If you search through these forums, you will find several threads that discuss why you need to wire this way. It has to do with the fact that the coax is a 2-way street. The receiver sends signals to the dish, and the dish sends the applicable channels back to the receiver. Not all channels from all satellites, are on the coax at any given time.
