We like many others had to do the RBR(1st time ever) on our HR20-100 after pulling the plug didn't reboot the system and we lost everything on our DVR and favorite list. We called Direct TV to see if there was a way to recover the shows from the hard drive that was about 85% full with unwatched shows the customer service guy had to leave twice to go talk to the tech supervisor to try and gain some insight on the problem since he had never heard of the problem before. The tech guy said that the only way the hard drive would reset itself is if we had pressed the reset button while the hard drive was in distress mode, which we wouldn't be able to see because the only way of knowing is to see the warning on the screen, but since the box wouldn't power on there was nothing there to tell us of a problem.

Besides the $10 a month for 12 months that we got off we asked if there was a way to insure us that it would not happen again in the future and the CS guy went back to talk to the tech supervisor and he said for us to copy the shows off our hard drive. I asked the CS does Direct TV allow that and isn't that illegal? Our we allowed to or is there a illegal way for us to back up our hard drives? I was under the impression that it was something that we were not allowed to do?

any shows that i want to archive i hook up the S vid to my dvd burner and it's fine. however daily copying of shows, as the CSR stated, is preposterous..whats the point of a DVR if not to store shows?
