If we set up a custom guide to use exclusively, instead of all channels, and D* adds new channels to our current programming, like new HD channels, etc. will the new channels show up in our custom guide? Or will we have to check "all channels" periodically to see if new stuff has been added?

Nope, you will have to check periodically to see if new stuff has been added.

But if you monitor these forums, you will see threads and discussions about anything that is added.

It goes both ways.

The DirecTivos added it to the custom lists, and people compalined about it.

So until they introduce some sort of user configurable options, I don't see it changing.

Well, I personally wouldn't like waking up one day to surf and find that the "all lego's all the time" channel and the "watch the grass grow 24/7" channel were between my favorites...so yeah, it does go both ways...
