The D* Customer Retention department called me, and offered me one of the following:

(1) An SD DVR
(2) An HD Receiver
(3) 24 Pay-Per-Views
(4) $10 off each month for 2 years

"All" I have to do is agree to a two-year contract. I have two weeks to decide.

Here's the deal, though - I already have an HD receiver (Samsung T160), and I want the HD DVR.

What should I do... Or (5) should I do nothing?

I said $10 a month for the next 2 years.

Why?
That covers the cost for say HBO or Showtime for that 2 years.
Which far out weights the 24 pay perviews (which are probably the $3.99 capped)

SD DVRs are only $99
HD DVRs are only $299 and possible even lower

I think getting $240 in the long run is a better deal.

Rather than letting them dictate what you get, tell them what you want. I find it quite puzzling that they would be offering you anything unless you're currently being (or are about to be) violated.

The cost of getting out of a contract is more than the $10 per month that they would give you to enter into the contract. I would recommend against entering into a contract with DirecTV until they have delivered on their promises of gobs of HD programming and a serviceable HD DVR.

I would wait till near the end of the two weeks and try for the HR20 HD DVR.

Who knows, they may be back in stock by then.

Otherwise, the $10/month is the better monetary deal.

I decided to wait (I agreed with paulman182)

They called me yesterday to tell me the HD DVR is available and in stock for my area now.

I went back and forth for a while with the rentention department, and maybe I didn't get all I could, but they knocked $188 off the price of the DVR (I payed a net of $111 plus tax), and then gave me $10 off per billing cycle.

I figure the whole deal saved me $428.

They install it a week from Monday.

Since I had purchased my SIR-TS160, I guess I get to keep it. I'm just not sure what to do with it (I can get $50 on Ebay)
