I signed my father up for DirecTV about a year ago, and he had no credit cards. They told me at that time that one was required, so I gave one of my credit card numbers.

I don't know about Dish.

I just read that a Credit Card is a requirement for D* service. Is that true? Is E* the same?
Yup I believe it is mandatory now. They don't charge anything to it unless you say to. I am sure they keep it on file. So if thier equipment is not returned. They can charge you for it

Hmmm... Just (finally) had an install on Monday. I was never asked for a credit card number, and directv.com says "no card on file". So somehow it must be possible.

Granted, due to HSP install problems I had to deal with the CEOs office, but I don't remember entering any CC numbers for the original orders either...

Then again, my bill is now negative for a few months due to the credits applied by the CEOs office. If it weren't for the fantastic picture quality compared to our cable company I'm half tempted to cancel to see if they would actually send me a check... :)

When I signed up over 4 years ago you only needed a cc if your credit was not very good. I was told to have one handy just incase. But I didnt need it. They did ask for my ssn and they told me they will do a credit check. Ask if I would allow them to.

credit cards are NOW required to pay for any outstanding balances (i.e. NRF, ECF, Svcs)

this is as of the april update

It's under section 5 of the customer agreement, paragraph E.

(e) Payment Upon Cancellation. You acknowledge that you have provided your credit or debit card account information to us. You understand that you will incur fees and charges as a result of your receipt and use of Service and/or Receiving Equipment, and may incur early cancellation fees and/or equipment non-return fees (as specified in any lease, programming or other service commitment agreement you entered into in connection with obtaining Receiving Equipment). By giving us your credit or debit card account information, you authorize us to apply this method of payment, in accordance with applicable law, to satisfy any and all amounts due upon cancellation. You further acknowledge that you are required to maintain current credit or debit card information with us and agree to notify us whenever there is a change in such information, such as a change in the card number or the expiration date.

In Nov. '07 I bought (leased) my equipment form a dealer, installed it myself and called D* to activate the service.

They never asked for a CC, never asked for a SSN or DOB. They just asked for name, address and what I wanted for programming.

As of today they still do not have my DOB, SSN, CC or phone number. They send a bill every month vis USPS and I pay online using a one-time cc payment option.

If you live in PA, you also do not need a credit card to activate D* service. Same as in MA.

When I first signed up (Jan. 97) i had to give a card number. Since I never used the card for the account I didn't care when it expired and later I even closed the account. It was never an issue until a couple years ago and I couldn't update info online because the card was expired. I put in a current expiration date and hte system ws happy even though theaccount had been closed 8 years

In this day and age of deadbeats, DirecTV does indeed require a credit card for certain things.

After being a subscriber for many many years, I upgraded to DVR service about a year ago, and sure enough I had to supply a valid national credit card number even though I have NEVER been late with payment to DirecTV. It's not like the old days when people (and businesses) trusted each other-especially after having a long-term association. Now, policies enforced by computers don't trust anybody.

It's sad, really.
