Does D* intend to support the H20 going forward. This box has a multitude of problems and has been ignored now for over 5 months by D*. Not a single upgrade to solve any of the issues. Sounds like they may be dropping the box or hoping all of that have them will get so upset we "upgrade" to the bug infested HR20. I was told repeatedly there was a late summer upgrade which never happened and the forums keep talking about one but we have seen notheing. I had a call with the "Office of the President" and was also told it was coming "soon". That was 3 months ago.

I've only had my H20 for about a month and guess I missed the problem discussions.

What should I be looking for?

I do have the 600 model and it does get hot, but I haven't noticed any issues.

I activated my second h20 last weekend. the second level tech guy said that there is going to be a download that updates the boxes within [he thinks] the next 90 days. this should activate the active channel and other fixes he didnt specify. while I was activating my box it said a download was waiting but that it couldnt be applied because the card I was using was too old [from a retired dtivo] . also when I asked about the difference between an h20 100 [sent to me for free by directv] and the h20 600 I bought from the blue shirts he said its just the same box made by different oem contractors. so he said.

I have a H20-100 and 600. One looks like a cheap knock off of the other.
They are close but not quite exactly the same. the chassis back on one is black, the other unpainted, one remote has bigger lettering and different formed rubber keys. One provides a small TV screen when looking at OTA signal strength, the other no screen at all. One has a 5th gen OTA tuner from LG, the other is probably 4th gen tuner. One has purple LEDs, the other has green and red LEDs on the front panel.
One accepts pressing select when changing channels, the other does not work with select and has a hair trigger (does not wait long enough for you to enter 3 digit channels). One runs alot cooler than the other. Both run cooler when put on taller legs.

What problems does the H20 have?

I've had 1 for about a year now and can't remember having any major problems!

Lost HD locals once for about an hour, but that's about it!

There is also the ongoing problem of the sound dropping for 10-15 seconds on HD channels as well as more than normal pixalation.
We've also had the sound issue. On top of that, when I'll pull up the guide, I'll get a black screen for a moment before the guide actually returns. We have seen some pixelation.

Is the pixelation worse on the H20 or the HR20?

I have the H20-100 and when HDMI is connected the 720p/1080i signals drop off every couple of seconds. Comp. works great. Tech Support says this is a known issue (some TV Mfg's have a different HDMI protocol it seems. I have a Sceptre LCD032"). TS said they are working of a SW fix. But, believing what Earl says, it sound like a hurry up and wait scenario. I have read where the -600 does not have this HDMI issue. Can anyone confirm?

I had a H20-600 first. It got so hot I was afraid it would catch fire. Also reboots. D* sent me a H20-100 and it has been perfect.

Huh. This is all news to me. I have had two -600's for a year now, I have never had problem one with them, neither OTA HD, nor MPEG4 HD, nor MPEG2. I thought all the problems were associated with the HR-20s

My 600 reboots every other day for no good reason on its own. It also freezes up, then I myself have to reboot it. When it reboots, the listings are lost and have to be retrieved again.

I've also had sound problems-- drop outs, usually during crucial parts of programs, such as near the end. Used to have sync problems, but that seems to be better now.

Sometime in mid-January, the picture started getting horonzontal or diagonal lines, most noticibly on HD channels, but also on standard NTSC channels as well. I tested the sats's signal strength and it was 86. I also changed cables with no improvement. Is any one else having this problem? Is it this box or a DirecTV transmission problem occuring on all boxes?

I own this 600 and got a full rebate on it. I would have asked to have it replaced with the 100, but I didn't realize what a lemon it was until the 3 month warranty had expired. So, I decided I'd just wait a "few months" and replace it with the new HD DVR. Now, it sounds like an even bigger lemon than the 600. :nono2:

I have an H20-600 and it has the same HDMI issues with my Westinghouse LVM-42W2 although the loss of picture (green screen) usually happened after a channel change. I now have it connected via an HDMI/DVI cable to avoid the HDMI handshaking issues. My HR-20 on the other hand, works fine HDMI/HDMI.

For those with H20-600 cooling issues, try a laptop cooler such as the one at the link below, Install it inverted (you'll have to add four small rubber stick-on feet) to draw hot air out of the top of the H20 and exhaust it to the back. It is USB powered so you can use the USB port on the H20, very quiet at the lower speed, very effective at dropping the internal temperature of the box and usually solves heat related lockup and reboot problems.
