There's been a lot of talk lately about the performance of the HR*/H* series boxes.

In my mind, D* could significantly improve things if they dumped Game Lounge - all the channels, and - more importantly - all the crappy code. To me (I've only been in IT for 25+ years), bloated code can KILL any application/system.

I can't see how Game Lounge is helping things - the performance on these dinosaurs is MUCH worse than an Atari 2600. The code behind it has got to be horrible to perform so badly.

D* - Please kill Game Lounge. Make my receiver do what I need it to do - display current shows, record and play shows, and give me a well-performing user experience.

Game lounge probably has no affect on your DVR unless you tune to one of the game lounge channels.

But I agree, get rid of game lounge so, if nothing else, I'll stop getting it as an anniversary gift. :lol:

As I'm on on iPad app I can't link the thread. But suffice to say, you will not have to worry about that any longer.

Pretty sure someone would eventually bring that up. I'm also pretty sure that the users of these games have about five other devices that not only give them games but do the job better.

If anything, I would think all of the movie posters and icons (graphics in general) are slowing them down. Just give me the ability to turn them off.

I'm just advocating for a reduction in the size of the running programs. Getting rid of Game Lounge would be a great start.

If you're not using it, then it's not affecting any functions...it's the same as disabling it.

I have used it with the free previews and it's slow to load and some times I end up locking up the box trying to use it.

Not true. In software, usually unused code bloats the size of the executable objects- normally slowing the system

I think of it like MS Word on my laptop. When I don't use it it isn't affecting the performance of my computer so, as long as there's room for it, I don't care if it's there or not. I know there are differences between my laptop and my DVR but isn't this a similar situation?

PPV is awesome, so much cheaper than going to the theater. Plus I serve beer in my living room.

GoBeavs - you're 100% correct about having "room for it". The issue is that the HR2* architecture is years old now and (to me) doesn't seem to be able to handle everything.

I see D* having 3 options:
1. Put out a brand new architecture - the HR24-500 is still fairly slow.
2. Cut out the non-DVR related features and stick with the current hardware
3. Status Quo - entropy and feature bloat eventually render the HR* unusable

I have only ever met one other person who even knew what Game Lounge was, let alone used it. I got it as an anniversary gift last year, and it won't even run on my HR20 (but it loads OK on the HR21). Still it is slower than just getting my (laptop/tablet/iPhone) out to play the same game without a subscription.

Game Lounge is used by a lot of people. Much like people here were surprised how many folks use other services...D* has a very broad, diverse customer base from all walks of life and levels of engagement in the products and services. Where some people would never think of Game Lounge or PPV or sports, etc, others use and purchase those services enthusiastically.
