Good morning and welcome to this week's thrill-filled episode review extravaganza! It promises to be the most exciting review yet!
Are you primed for a letdown? Are you suspecting that my sarcasm is beginning to bubble over? Well folks, LIIIIIIIVE, This is DANCING WITH THE STARS!!!
It's immediately clear that the producers had no idea how to fill the time left by Ms. May-Treanor's departure from the show. It was nice to see her interviewed but it felt like a big speed bump. Let's be honest, I would have tuned out at 9:47 if I thought the last 13 minutes would be so uneventful.
As for the couples who did dance, they had to attempt to show prowess with the Viennese waltz or the jive. In a different season, we might be discussing how dances weren't really suited for one person or another, but this week no one really broke out anyway.
The Good (almost by default):
I will give surreptitious mention to Mr. Sapp and Ms. (Brooke) Burke for having the best dances of the night. In fact these were the only modestly interesting dances of the night for me. Looking at these two celebrities it would be hard to imagine them pulling off a soft, gentle, smooth waltz but they certainly did! Both were unexpectedly smooth and had excellent flow. Neither waltz was up to the level of previous seasons but both were good efforts.
The Bad:
In truth, none of this week's dances were bad. Ms. Leachman, who will probably go home tonight if anyone does, was inexplicable... but not bad. (You all know she gets automatic 10s from me.) The other dancers were boring to a fault. Mr. Bass and Ms. Schwimmer decided to play by the rules this week and showed America that they are not that good after all. Ms. Lucci, who most certainly does not look her age, unfortunately danced her age. I like her so much but she is not blossoming as a dancer. Mr. Linley should have nailed his jive- his youth and energy were perfect for that dance. Still, I found it boring and repetitive. Ms. Braxton was probably the worst of the night but a lot of that came from her costume and truly awful music.
The Ugly:
In fact the worst part of tonight's outing was the costume selection! Hideous! I can't say enough for the dedication of the costume designers who work so hard, but the look was just awful this week! My initial thoughts were, (1) OK, there was a sale on turquoise fabric and (2) Really? Really?
Ms. Braxton suffered most of all but honestly this was a low point for both costume and hair design.
I'm very dissatisfied with the production values this season, and I think it's bleeding over to my opinion of the dancers. These are hard working people. They are putting in their hearts and souls but it's not coming out on the screen.
One more thing, a quick bow down to Ms. May-Treanor, who leaves the competition too soon.
Likely to leave tonight: No one, as I think they'll give everyone a pass
My choices to leave tonight:Ms. Lucci or Mr. Linley
