When deactivating an owned unit, is it best to call the Access Card department?
I stated "deactivate receiver" at the prompt when calling two weeks ago to deactivate two STBs.

The CSR didn't have an issue with noting that one of my receivers (HR20) was leased and needed to be returned, and that my other receiver was owned and no action was needed.

I still haven't received a recovery kit for my HR20 though. I may have to call about that... :nono2:

I just cancelled my service today and have always thought I owned my receiver but I was told differently. I paid $199 for a hr21 due to a rebate and I call that purchased or owned. My bill showed both a fee and credit for $6 on a primary leased receiver and I had the protection plan fee. Either way they are sending a box and postage to send the box back. I guess if smells like a duck it is necessary a duck!

Owned an leased HD VRs are handled differently.

To the OP - an owned unit can be deactivated by a CSR and also reactivated in the future if/when you want to do so.

I've deactivated/reactivated a number of HD DVR devices through a CSR multiple times over recent years.

Leased units are processed for a return procedure.

If I had owned equipment, I would call a CSR and confirm it was owned then that CSR would deactivate it. Hypothetically.

Yeah, if you pay $200 for a DVR from DirecTV or a reseller, it's leased and has to be returned.

H/HR20's are no longer being recovered
That's what I thought, but I read/asked (on here) a few months ago, and I was told that HR20s are indeed still being recovered... and the CSR told me that it would need to be returned and that she was placing an order for a recovery kit for me...

Yep. To actually own the receiver or DVR you have to pay "full" price, not the up-front lease price. Full price for a DVR is around $400. The leasing model started in March 2006 and has been in effect since, so if you originally acquired your DVR after March 2006, then it would be leased.

During the first few months following that change, there was a lot of confusion, and many resellers were not at all clear about it being a lease charge as opposed to a purchase price. Since about September or October of 2006, DirecTV has been very careful about making sure the units are marked as leased, and CSRs (normally) are careful to point that out when the item is activated.

And still ripoff, as the $199 never coming back, counting they does force you return the DVR !

Owned price for an HR2x is $499 currently. And the HR20s weren't being recovered as of 7/8/12, but this may be on a case by case basis. I've seen some that have been installed recently (I would be so annoyed if they installed me with one!)
