The fan stopped working in my HR20-100 resulting in thermal shutdowns. It is going to be replaced through the protection plan. Glad I signed up for that.

Anyway, what are the odds I get another HR20 shipped to me? What the odds I get an HR21, 22, 23, or 24?

Also, I do have an OTA setup through my SWM8 which was self installed, so D* doesn't really know about that or so it seems. Not sure I want to sweat hooking the antenna back up again, so I didn't request a replacement DVR that supports that. But if I do change my mind down the road, does the AM21 work with only the HR21, 22, 23 models? Thought they had a new version for the HR24.

You'll get whatever is in the refurb hopper which could be any HR2x model. The AM21 works with all Directv HD DVRs. There is a redesigned AM21n but it's functionally identical to the original.

Since I didn't win the latest Powerball jackpot, maybe I was saving my luck for a good draw off the warehouse DVR pile. I have an HR23 at my vacation home and I like that box better than the HR20 and HR21 I have at base camp.

DirecTV is phasing out distribution of AM21(N)'s.
CSR's are already telling customers that they are depleted and no longer selling them.
I just replaced 3 OTA integrated receiver models with 2 HR21's and a HR22.
DirecTV already agreed to provide and ship all 3 AM21(N)'s for free, but had to process those after the replacement receivers were delivered AND activated.
When I called back to process the tuners, that's when I was told I'd have to order from a retailer.
After the third call (on 08/16), I found a CSR who was able to locate them, and got them shipped.
Actually none of the 3 CSR's, even the one who could locate them, knew what they even were.
Turns out a few were held back for in-house tech support, and the rest scheduled to ship to retailers. (I think mine were pulled from these).

I could still place the AM21(N)'s in my online shopping cart... didn't order because they would have been billed, but was curious if I could.
Was told that if I processed online, it would have just died on the vine.
Removing these from the online ordering was supposed to have coincided with the discontinuation, but didn't happen.

If you thought you might get around to adding one later, suggest you act now... it may already be too late...
Yes, you can buy one from a retailer, but speculate that they don't have many in stock, and aren't likely to restock...

Yet on my account, I can order one online.

I received an HR21-200 as a replacement. It least it knows how to configure itself with my WGA600n wireless adapter, so setting up the network comnection was easy as pie. For now, I'll go without my OTA. Think I'll be fine without it.

I was in the same boat; failed 20-100 replaced by a refurbed 21-100. Would you like to fathom a guess how long that lasted? About 3 weeks. Understandably, I was not impressed.

Here's hoping you have better luck.

I considered buying a HR-24 outright just to insure against this problem happening a third time, but they actually want to start the contract clock again if you do that. A little ironic, as that was the moment I lost faith in whether I wanted to remain as a customer.

You're right. I hope this works out well. If this one dies quickly, I'll definitely push to get a new unit, not a refurb. I've been a customer for 9 years and would expect some consideration for that.

Not supposed to be an issue for existing customers....

If you didn't have the protection plan the replacement DVR would have cost you $19.99 in shipping charges. How much have you paid for the protection plan over the years, that makes you glad to have saved $19.99?
I got a replacement dish after it was damaged which could have been a matter of debate and a re-peak on the new dish after the house painters bumped into it.
