Trick play display and features. The timeline is junk, no live tv button is present, the duration behind live tv isn't known and the forward and rewind buttons arent nearly as user friendly as Dish. I think directv could benefit from some usability testing or just plain copy from Dish in this category. As a new Directv user from Dish, I felt I went back in time from a trick play perspective.

Why do you need a live TV button? Just hit exit.
What do you mean, "the duration behind live TV isn't known"? The progress bar tells you your progress, no?
And what do you mean by forward and rewind buttons are "user friendly"? One moves forward and one moves backwards, no?

The 30 second forward takes 4 times as long as Dish. The timeline doesnt tell you how far behind live tv you are....it does give you an indication in increments. But doesn't tell you that you have 10:00 (as an example) minutes to make up. Dish runs a counter when live TV is paused telling you exactly how far behind you are which is very beneficial.
What do you mean by exit? Hitting exit when behind live tv just makes an annoying noise and doesn't get you up to live tv.
Just saying the interface isn't nearly as user friendly as Dish...yes it may be because it is new to me, but it does have inferior features to Dish on my opinion.

Welcome to the Directv side of things 
I think that you'll find a lot of other features with Directv that you'd miss if you ever went back to DISH. With that said, I think that there are a lot of areas where 'basic functionality' could use some more focus.
The competition technology-wise between Directv and DISH has been mostly focused on 'Big and Fancy', which are selling points. The one thing that you can count on with Directv is that they're constantly working to make improvements. It's a 24/7/365 process.

For 30 second skip, it's default is slip. To change it:
Go to Search for Programs in your menu. Then search by Keyword. Using your remote, search for the keyword "30SKIP" (no quotes). Your search will yield no results. Select "Continue" and then "Done"

I just switched from Directv and I must agree with you Dish is more user friendly and the skip and live functions are pretty awesome.. This isn't a bash on Directv, they have great channels etc, but I do like the Hopper very well. I came from having 2 HR24's and one HD receiver and generally quite happy. I only switched because of a little sports network in the Pacific coast..unislick said:

They're every 15 min on a 1 hour show, and 30 mins on 2 hours shows.
I also use the >> and 30skip to jump to ticks.

Since it's been this way going back to '06, "I doubt" you'll see a change.
I doubt it either...but 8 years with Dish they continually enhanced this most commonly used feature over time. For example, they recently enhanced the pause feature to not show the entire timeline after a few seconds so it doesn't limit the viewing picture and ran a small counter instead telling the user how far behind live TV they are. Also, they dimmed the screen as well to avoid burn in, etc...before the screen saver kicks on. Just a few enhacements I saw over the past year....I am sure Directv makes enhancements as well...sometimes the little things make more of a user impact than "Genie's in a bottle" .

I guess I don't understand the need to know how far behind live TV you are to the minute. I can glance at it and tell that I'm about 5 minutes behind or 10 minutes or whatever it is. I don't need to know that I'm 7.8 minutes behind, but maybe that's just me.

I don't understand the need to see a timer telling you how far behind you are, since when you are on live tv, it tells you what times are at the ends of the time bar for the program that is currently playing, as well as showing you exactly what time you are at in the program.
No need to add a fourth time on it.
