I upgraded an older HR21 to a HR24-500. The HD channels are fine on the HR24 but the SD channel deinterlacing is horrible. I've never seen so many "Jaggies" on my TV. I also have a HR23-700 that does not have this problem with SD content.

Changing to Native Mode does not make a difference. The only change that makes a difference is to use letter box. Using letter box is not needed on the other receivers. I did a quick search on the forum but could not find any postings about this. Is anyone else having this issue with the HR24 or do I have a bad receiver?

If you change to native "on" and set 480i as one of the resolutions then the TV will do the deinterlacing...
Also I have an HR24-500 and do not have this problem..

You haven't posted what type of TV you're using, or how you're connected to it.
This shouldn't be the HR24, as like others are posting, I have 2 and don't have this problem.
If you're changing HD to letterbox, "something" isn't set right for a HD TV.

There are many "perhaps" here.
"Normally" the receiver settings are straight forward, but I came across a HD ready 4:3, where all the settings, that worked right, ended up being backwards. The receiver needed to be set to 16:9, all resolutions selected, and original format. This was the only setting that worked for SD & HD.
"Basically" send everything unaltered to the TV and have it sort everything out.

first of all, you shouldn't stretch a SD signal out to 16:9 then try to watch it on a 60" tv anyway, choosing to watch in native mode is the way to go, which would normally be called 4:3 or normal mode, for a directv receiver they for some reason call it letterbox which is actually backwards of what letterbox really is.

I don't really think its a deinterlacing problem, but a stretch problem, you will notice no jaggies if watching in 4:3 mode and the deinterlacing is fine

You need to spend a bit more time with DirecTV receiver's and their settings.
"letterbox" only is an option when the TV setting is 4:3, and this works for HD channels only.
When the TV setting is for 16:9, then pillarbox for SD channels is the option.
BTW: SD over HDMI to my Sony 1080p is "just fine", so I don't know what you've set for it to "suck".

"Native" has to do with the output resolution options, not the format options. "stretch" is a format setting.

The TV is a Samsung UN46B7000 LED. Connected to a Yamaha RX-2010 Receiver through HDMI. The receiver is doing the HDMI switching. The identical setup with the older HR21 does not have the this issue, My HR23 is fine also.

HR24 is set to 16X9. When I tune to station 211, I get a DirectTV Logo. On the HR24, text in the logo has very jagged edges, if I select 1080I Pillar box format, the jagged edges go away. On the HR21, all the screen formats, 480i all the way to 1080I are fine.

As someone suggested, changing to 480I and native does help. The box is only a week old, I am just trying to figure out if I should keep it or send it back for a replacement. If another unit is going to be the same, I will keep it since I will be watching HD most of the time and I still have the other box.

My HR24-500 is the same way on SD channels. Setting native to on for SD channels helps but does not completely cure the issue. I've tried the HR24-500 on three different brands of tv's with the same results. As with yours, my HD channels are fine. My Sony seems to handle it the best. My old H20-100 handles SD channels much better. (no jaggies)

ah, it is pillar box, that makes a little sense, but all other tvs and systems just call that "normal" mode, directv made up this pillar box thing, no one goes by that.

If you turn on native, you watch the 4:3 program in 4:3 you cant stretch it is all im saying.

Anyhow watch the show how its supposed to be viewed.

All hr24 equipment looks terrible in original format while watching SD material.
Dish network makes the stretch look "ok" ........directv is just worse. All im saying.....

Oh, my 40" sony bravia and my samsung 58" plasma make SD not too terrible. I have seen many tvs that look pathetic

I would ask (actually puzzled not to see the info in your posts) - do you know how to check current resolution and refresh rate on your TV ? Some remote has separate button for that. Named "INFO".

Again, native only means it's being output in 480 [if selected as an option], but you still have stretch, pillar bar, original, and crop options for format.

"I must say" this 46" XBR Bravia, can make an SD program look "fairly good" in Zoom [not scaled by my HR24-500].
I've posted screen shots of the difference between this TV's zoom and the HR2x's crop. One I can watch and the other I can't/won't, etc.
