Did installer bring HDMI?

2209 Views 26 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  Tom Robertson
I'm getting the HR20 this weekend; I recorded the HR20 video for installers(in the 500s). the DTV tech guru said that while the HDMI cables were NOT included, it was MANDATORY that the installer provide them if the customer's TV had that type of connection. (as well as using optical connection if customer has Dolby Digital setup)

Just wondering if that has been the case.

Best bet is to call your installer. I called to make sure that I was getting the 5lnb dish once and then I called agian to make sure I was getting the proper multiswitch after reading several threads on this forum. The installer was more than happy to tll me that he had both of those items on the list for my install. I will verify these when he comes. I will also be callong tomorrow to ask if I will by chance be able to get the Slime dish instead of the AT9 since it has been confirmed that they are installing them.

Not for me. Had mine installed a couple weeks ago and I asked the installer (who was clueless in the first place) if the HDMI cables were included and he said, of course. Then I opened the box...NADA. I asked where they were or if he had any and he said, oh I guess not. Have to use component. Lucky I had some sitting around and used them.

I didn't really care cuz I didn't expect it but when someone tells me they have it and then show up and they do not, kind of frustrating.
The installer doesnt carry HDMI cables and it is only installed if you have one or the reeiver comes with one like the HR10 did so you will have to provide your own cabling

You clearly did not see the installer video that D* has now.
HDMI was not included in the box and the installer didn't have it either. I called retention and was offered a $50 credit or Showtime free for 6 months.
HDMI cables can be had for about $20 on-line. I got mine from Sam's club for $22.
I don't recall the video saying the installer should provide an optical cable. I know he is supposed to connect it if one is there, but I don't remember him providing one.

HDMI yes (although few do,) but not the optical audio. My memory could be faulty, but I'd make sure about that before pressing the issue.
When I had both of mine installed no hdmi cable but I had ordered a 6' and 3' before hand. Both were $22 online.
My first install of the AT-9 dish and H20 receiver back in Dec. 2005....the installer got to my house before I did (my wife was home) and installed a Directv HDMI to DVI cable from off his truck. No charge. I told him I had bought an adapter for my DVI cable and he told me to take it back to the store.

The second H20 box I had installed on another TV in March and the installer had a brand new Directv HDMI cable which he gave to me no charge.

My last install yesterday for my HR20 which replaced one of the H20's.....out of curiousity I asked the installer about HDMI cables and he said..."no way. You have to pay extra for one of those."

I guess it's a good idea to check with the installer ahead of time if you don't have the cable you want/need.
Probably most people do what I did, which is to have the cables on hand for the installation.

I sure would not have wanted to wait another several days for him to bring the cable back.

I know that component input is as good as, or almost as good as HDMI, but I have never had HDMI before and I wanted it!
DirecTV wants the installer to use the best possible connecting cable for best picture. It's the policy of DirecTV that they use the best based on the customers setup. So you should not have to worry about it. Watch the HR20 program on 578 and they verify what I have said.
I had my new HR20 installed 10/17 and asked the installer HDMI cable he said I have to buy one on my own. I saw the the program on channel 578 so I called D*, after 3 transfers I was told they will sell me one for 150.00. I explain the program and was told they do not supply HDMI cable for free. I will call back and try again.

QFT. Their own freaking installer education video states that they MUST connect the box to the TV using HDMI (not supplied with the unit) if that connection is available. They say it like 3 times during that video, and heavily emphasize it.

$150 should buy you like 8 HDMI cables.
The local installer that setup my HR20 had the HDMI cable.. however I used the component cable option after reading about some difficulties others had with the HDMI interface.

what is a "Slime" dish?
I suppose "Slime" is the new "Slimline" dish; a little smaller and lighter than the AT9, and more space-age looking.

Ya know folks, that install video is meant for installers, not us. Perhaps after it was produced a memo was circulated among installation companies that the HDMI cable need not be supplied. Maybe D* itself changed its mind.

I don't think that just because it is in that video, they have any responsibilty to do it, because the video is not for consumers anyway.

They have good cables, I use 3 of them (two to a Monoprice 5x1 HDMI switch, which also works well with my Harmony 628 remote).
