What causes a DVR to switch to a different channel overnight when no recordings are set? I am beginning to suspect my teenager is getting up in the middle of the night and channel surfing. When I go to bed, I almost always watch the news on channel 10-1, but the next morning it is on a movie channel or a discovery channel. There is nothing set to record. Thx

Mine never switch to a different channel unless there is a scheduled recording. Nocturnal teenager is my guess, especially if it’s on Skinemax.

I find my DVRs (either the HR20-700 or the Tivo R10) often set to ch. 200 or 201 when I turn it on sometimes. This is the D* setup channel. No idea why it happens either.

DTV sends EPG updates in the middle of the night (2 AM where I am). This requires the DVR to tune to that channel to get the update. I assume that the DVR knows to do this because it is trained as such. Tivo, for instance, will even ask for permission to do this (if not in standby) just in case you are watching live. If you are recording on both tuners it will wait until later. If you take the option to opt out of the update, it will also try again later. This used to be problematic for late-night viewers when DVRs had but one tuner. Having two tuners means it can do it and allow you to keep watching (or recording).

So 200/201 is normal. Discovery? Movie channel? Skinemax? Teenager.
