Difficulty opening a 2nd DISH account at second home

4021 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  tampa8
I have a DISH account at a home in Colorado. I attempted put DISH in my Florida home. Already being a DISH customer for several years did not make me more reliable but immediately suspect. Beyond credit check and credit card submission etc, the normal stuff, I was subjected to an incredible, once in a lifetime interrogation to "confirm my identity" "because I already had a DISH account". They ran this process through Equifax. After determining my home address was legit (where the DISH would have been installed, BTW) after confirming I was paying a mortgage on that home address, the questions went on and on. Stuff like, who provided and how much were the monthly payments on a loan I took out in 2004. I eventually screwed up an answer. I was then told I would have to pull my credit report and call back with the correct answers.

The ONLY justification I can imagine is that DISH data was hacked and therefore anyone seeking a DISH account who already had one was suspected of using stolen data, presumably not knowing where it came from because only a complete idiot would sign up for DISH with credit ID stolen from DISH. Anybody got another explanation while I wait into the second day for a return call from DISH "Executive Resolutions Team"?

Second accounts under the same SSN are PITAs to process. You'd do better to do a Snowbird process and bring your receiver back and forth. Unless both accounts would be used at the same time.
I would have had my wife start the account. Her credit is even better than mine. Different name, different address, different cc. There would have been no problems.

You can always contact a DIRT member. Or even sign up with another service.
Was it Dish, or a retailer?
It was Dish he ran into FACT ACT department. They basically are there to prevent potential fraudulent accounts from being created, thus why all the questions.
Since this is nothing more than someone wanting two accounts, the tittle should be changed, it's not fair for that to come up on a search.... Quite an assumption to jump to.
I had to have two accounts due to secondary address out of state a few years ago but I don't recall going through all that to have a second account.
The program doesnt always pick up on duplicate name entries in the system. But when it does, or if it picks up a duplicate address or other piece of info you can expect to get in touch with FACT ACt and have to go through every detail of info imaginable to get the account made.
I'm sure this is part of a protection process that they should be doing to make sure someone hasn't attempted identity fraud to open a second account in your name. While it might be frustrating, it is better than the alternative... allowing other people to open accounts in your name!

First, in answer to a question, yes - this is DISH - not a DBS provider.

Whether I am the John Goldsmith or not I wanted to put the new account in the primary and legal residence of THE John Goldsmith for whom they had records and for whom Equifax had records. This was established before the third degree. How many people commit fraud this way?
Let me see. Oh yeah, that's right. NONE.

Thanks for the advice as to how get around this but, not needed. I can pull my own credit report, call back, answer all the questions and get the DISH. That's not the issue.

The issue is: God, I get tired of jumping through hoops that are ridiculous and what if there has been a security breach?

Just thought other DISH subscribers might be interested if their customer data is out there floating around and/or I wanted to see if anyone else with DISH has had a recent problem with identity theft.

Thanks for your interest.

And thus, the point is made. They're ensuring nobody commits fraud and uses your information against your wishes. With so many security breaches at companies you're lambasting a company for being strict about it?

You would be surprised.
I worked at Dish about a year and a half and while I was taking calls I would average about 50-80 calls a day on a 10 hour shift. If memory serves correctly i would run into about at least 5 people calling in daily trying to "Fish" for information on users accounts so that they could later flip and make a duplicate fraudulently.
And thats just me, according to the internal forum there some of the members had similar experiences fairly often as well.

There are call centers out there dedicated to calling real call centers all day long trying to fish for info on people. Theres nothing like meeting a mr "raymundo garcia" with an indian accent :p

Not to mention thats just taking into account the fishers. I have run into customers in the past who did have there name used to make a fraudulent account, its rare but it does happen sometimes it slips through the cracks. Thats why the Fact Act team exists and thats why all the head ache your going through exists because it does indeed happen and its an ABSOLUTE head ache for the affected victims to deal with.

People sign others up for things or even cancel services all the time IF they can get away with it.

I once had a credit card stolen (not the card, just the number) and someone actually used it to register a domain name... for which I got the bill because I had already canceled that card once I saw weird charges...

The point, though, is that they registered a domain name using my contact info... and of course I got the bill for it in the mail because they couldn't use the credit card if the billing address didn't match the card's.

So... someone steals your identity and wants Dish, they might just be stupid enough to try and sign up for it thinking they can then change the service address later and leave the billing address in your name.

It's cause and effect - You don't see the fraud because Dish is doing their job on this.
I would expect nothing less of Dish if someone called to open an account in my name. And if there had been a "security breach?" You would be here in seconds posting how inept Dish is to allow someone to open an account in your name.
