Digital Optical Audio Cable Connection

5899 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  generalpatton78
I want to connect the optial audio out of my DIRECTV HD Receiver to a Yamaha Home Theater AV Receiver. I purchased a Audio Optical Digital Cable from RadioShack. The optial digital out on the DIRECTV receiver has a gray cover with a flap. When I tried to push in the digital optical cable from RadioShack there seem to be some resistance and I don't want to try to force this cable into this port. Should I be more aggresive or is there something I need to know in making this connection?

If your cable is a TOSLink digital optical cable (thin, with a rectangular plug) just snap it into place. If you're trying to use a coax digital cable (round and much thicker, with a round metal connector), it won't work.

Sorry to be so basic, just trying to be clear. :)
Look for a small clear plastic cap over the tip of the connector. You have to remove it.
As long as it looks like this, push it in (after removing any cap as Spock says). Also notice one side is flat and one side is beveled. Make sure it's lined up correctly:

That's too BIG! It will never fit in my DVR!

Watch - next he'll tell me where I can stick it!

I had the same problem with the Yamaha until I realized that I had to remove the small plastic cap as mentioned by others earlier. Certainly, this is your problem.
Thanks for the quick reply. Having never dealt with this type of connection, I did not realize that I had to remove the small plastic caps on the end of the cable. Thanks again-----
