Digital TV test: A surprise or two

All of the local Milwaukee, WI OTA stations ran a "Digital TV test" today during their newscasts at 5:10PM CDT. What they did was "split" the programming on their analog and digital transmitters so folks watching the analog feed got a "you aren't set up for the conversion next February" slide while the folks watching the digital feed got a "congratulations!" slide.

Now as for the surprises in the title of this message!

I don't have DirecTV HD yet so I watch these stations' SD feeds from the 101. As it turns out, ALL of them are being picked up in digital and uplinked to DTV for conversion to SD and then downlinked to customers on the 101 EXCEPT for the local NBC station (WTMJ-TV/channel 4)!! I suspected as much as you can still see slight ghosting when graphics are being displayed. Of interest is that DTV also carries this station IN HD!!

Surprise number two involved the local CBS affiliate (WDJT-TV/channel 58) which DTV still hasn't reached an agreement with so it is not carrying it in HD. HOWEVER, it's SD feed is being picked up in digital!!

Very strange....

I wonder how many people were watching the NBC affiliate and saw the "you aren't ready for the digital conversion" slide and called either the 800 number the local station was pushing OR the DTV CSR's!!! :D

There was a list linked in a post here or on satelliteguys that had the cities and the SD channels being carried in digital format from analog. I am sure someone can dig it up on a search. It had both the directv and dish network date for all the DMAs.

You probably are referring to http://mstv.org/docs/satschedalpha.pdf.
my local NBC station did the same thing but they turned off the analog transmitter for a couple seconds.

In that document, it shows some markets that are currently SD only. Does this mean those markets will be getting HD LIL around those times?
No is it just a list that shows the date the DBS providers will be receiving those stations in digital format from analog. Has nothing to do with HD, only digital reception of stations in that DMA.

Same thing is happening across the Commonwealth of PA sometime in November around the 6pm news hour. I can't remember the exact date.
