I called Dish out to replace my DVR when it died on me last week. I wasn't home when they came by, but it looks like they removed the diplexer and did a home run from my HD antenna to the 722. Now most of my locals come in at a lower signal strength, about 10-15% lower. I'm thinking I need to install an amplifier or put the diplexer back.

Am I on the right track?

Did they also remove the other diplexer of the pair? Did they think the cabling had something to do with the receiver going out? That's the only reason I can think of why they would be changing the cables on a simple receiver swap.

The diplexer would lower the signal even more, not enhance it. If you did not need an amp before you should not need one with a direct connection. If they ran a new cable I would first check the connection on each end of the new run. It might not have a tight connector some where.

Stupid installer did my fathers install and added an attenuator to the OTA cable! He thought it was a combiner. OTA signals were all but lost. I pulled it out and replaced it with a plain one and he's back up and running. Installer told him when he put it in that that was how it was supposed to look. Duh! My Dad wanted OTA to go to two TV's and the installer said that was not possible because one TV would have good signal (the side of the attenuated combiner/splitter that wasn't attenuated) and the other TV would get the poor signal he ended up with after his mistake!
