So, it would appear that directv apps, for whatever reason, need to initiate an inbound connection through your firewall to work given that the receiver can be configured for upnp or manual inbound listening ports. With my sorry ISP, the only way I can do this is by paying for a static IP address as they assign a private IP to customers who do not buy the static. Am i missing anything substantial by not having the apps?

The apps are strictly optional. I don't think there's anything that you can't get elsewhere, although it's nice to have it all in one place.

I have AT&T DSL and a dynamic IP. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium and PRO 32-bit. D* Apps work great for me! I suggest that something else is causing the D* Apps not to work. Do you have network / internet setup on D*? Verify that Windows Discovery and File and Print Sharing are "ON" in Network and Sharing Center. Universal Plug and Play is resolved when D* network and network services setup procedure are run.

Are you missing anything by not having Apps? Well, that depends if you like quick access to sports scores, weather, or are into social networking. Also, DirecTV2PC, Game Lounge, and YouTube must have an internet / network connection.

I'm sure there may be other factors and you came to the right place. DBSTALK members are a Google of information and opinion. Best wishes!

Thanks guys. I'll not bother then. Also, thank you allenn. Unfortunately, it's not that my isp gives me a dynamic public ip, it's that without paying for a static ip, i get a private ip in the 10. space. So they NAT my private ip to one of their publics along with many other customers. This means that any Internet connectivity from my place must be initiated from the inside for the nat to build the translation as i cant configure port forwarding on their nat firewall such as I could my own if they'd pass me a public ip. It's a bummer, but a price I pay for living in the sticks and being stuck with Joe Bob's ISP.. :)
