We've had DirecTV for only about 2 weeks now and today we ordered our first Cinema movie (The Amazing Spider-man). It started playing and had this constant stutter. When I changed the HR34 resolution to 1080i it goes away. My TV is a 1080p TV and even supports 24fps, Blu-rays play just fine at 1080p/24fps so I know the TV is not the issue. Yes, I'm using HDMI and it is plugged directly into the TV, not going through a receiver or anything.

I don't see how it could be my internet connection because every speed test I do gets between 17Mbps and 22Mbps, that should be fast enough (at least it is with every other streaming service like Netflix 1080p). The movie shows up in our recorded list but, doesn't appear to be downloading in the background like other On Demand content. Is this stutter issue common, is there anything else I could try to troubleshoot the problem?

Good thing is that when I switch the HR34 to 1080i, I don't see a huge drop in picture quality so, it will not be that big of a deal if I have to leave it like that.

Thanks for any help.

Have you tried resetting your receiver?

since DirecTV uses 1080p/24 fps there is no difference from that to 1080i/60. since both have the same amount of pixels, the advantage would come from the frame rate/ refresh rate. so 1080i/60 has double the info than 1080p/24. but 1080p/60 draws the lines consecutively compared to "odd vs even" on interlaced. in other words. there is no difference. this is a marketing hype.

No idea what is causing your problem, but peds is 100% correct. A properly deinterlaced 1080i signal should be appear identical to its 1080p counterpart. The 1080p requires slightly less digital bandwidth because the 1080i signal has some redundant information, but when it goes on the screen, it should look exactly the same. Does sound like a digital bandwidth bottleneck though that causing the "stutter".

What TV is this problem showing up on? If it has motion interpolation like AutoMotion Plus, TrueMotion, etc. try turning that off to see if it helps.

Haven't there been some on-going issues with VOD content (which has been recorded to the hard drive of HR34 DVR's) "stuttering" on playback???

Thought I' read about it here and that D* was aware of it and working on the problem...
