The First Excel attachment to this post, TPN_MAP_Domestic, covers all U.S. DIRECTV Channels and Transponders, CONUS (Continental U.S. or wide/National beams) and LIL (Local-Into-Local or narrow/Spot beams). Satellites at the 95W, 99W, 101W, 103W, 110W and 119W positions are included.

Note that at the bottom of the Domestic Excel page, there are eight tabs or 'sheets':

  • CONUS TPN MAP all CONUS channels in channel number sequence

  • LIL TPN MAP all Local-Into-Local satellite channels in network number (market name) sequence

  • OTA all Over-The-Air channels in network number (market name) sequence

  • HYBRIDS all Hybrid and Offline (Inactive) channels, in channel number sequence

  • LIL MARKET LIST Local Market database and cross reference information necessary to navigate the LIL TPN Map

  • CHANNEL COUNT a count of channels provided per satellite

  • NETWORK DECODER display of the satellites and transponders graphically as it appears on your receiver's signal strength display

  • TUTORIAL a quick procedure to find your LIL transponders the very first time
A Second Excel attachment, TPN_MAP_LatinAm, covers DIRECTVLA Latin America transponders.
Note that at the bottom of the LatinAm Excel page, there are seven tabs or 'sheets':
  • BEAM OESTE all channels in Network 0 in channel number sequence

  • BEAM SUR all channels in Network 1 in channel number sequence

  • BEAM PR all channels in Network 2 in channel number sequence

  • OTA all Over-The-Air channels in network number sequence

  • HYBRIDS all Hybrid channels, in channel number sequence

  • NETWORK LIST Satellite Beam and OTA Network Numbers

  • LA NETWORK DECODER display of the satellites and transponders graphically as it appears on your receiver's signal strength display

Additional details for US Domestic channels are available regarding:
OTA (Over The Air) information and discussion in this DBSTalk thread.
DNS (Distant Network Service) information and discussion in this DBSTalk thread.
LIL (Local-Into-Local) information and discussion in this DBSTalk thread.
All documents are fully unprotected so you may copy and use the data as you wish.

The new data today reflects a tremendous amount of background work that has been going on for many weeks.

The data interpretation software that deals with the initial raw binary data has undergone a major re-write. The result is more definitive data, greater accuracy and fewer 'hybrid' records which have inconclusive definitions.

The post-processing software has also undergone a full re-write to format and present that more-accurate data in an easy to read and understand format.

We hope you enjoy and appreciate the time and dedication that helps provide this great resource.

Hello. I am very interested in television technology, and often want to know where to find actual channels and what is actually being broadcast.

I have finally found a source for the technical data of the DirecTV service which not too much is known - at least I thought. Even though I cannot get DirecTV being out of range, I still am curious as to what is actually being broadcast.

In Europe and most of the rest of the world, MPEG2 and MPEG4 system is used, and all channels have SIDs (the number ID of the channel within a multiplex, VPID, the ID of the video stream, APID the ID of the audio carrier(s), and NID (the Network Stream ID which is usually assigned to a particular satellite.

I have had a look at the very amazing spreadhseet attatched to this thread and am very interested in it. It does raise a few questions.

1) What are the APID values of these channels? Can you put an APID column in? One example would be Gol TV on tp 2 on 101West? The VPID ( I assume in DSS this is the Video carrier value), for channel 426 and 620 is the same, so these two channels are the same - the only difference is one is in English and one in Spanish. That would mean the APIDs would be different on each of these, and every channel (or at least most) have an APID value also which has been omitted from the xls chart. DirectTV Sports Mix will have 8 APIDs on it if it is a mosaic.

As for radio channels (Sonic Tap), there is a differnet VPID for each of these here as well, rather than APID. For radio, normally VPID would be 0 and APID would vary.

2) I notice channels such as Hustler TV (599) on Tp 10 of 101West, and Playboy TV on tp 9 (channel 590) on 101West, has a VPID value of 0. In MPEG2 and MPEG4, this would normally mean there is no video, as it is not possible to have VPIDs and APIDs of 0 if you are watching or listening to something. So is there an error or can you have a VPID of 0 on a channel on DSS format, or was Playboy not on air at the time this file was taken? The description says Hustler is on 24 hours a day and this has a VPID of 0 as well. Please explain if possible.

3) Do I assume that transmission on 101West tp 4 has now ceased? I notice that this transponder is completely missing from the file. Can you please check tp 4 and tell me is this multiplex now off air? If it is broadcasting, what is on it?

Thank you very much and I look forward to hearing from you.

Well, as the first post from a brand new member, you may have set a record. Welcome to DBSTALK!

  1. We dropped posting the APID values long ago. But you can create them yourself. For MPEG2 channels APID = VPID + 1. For MPEG4 channels APID = VPID + 2.
  2. The channels you mentioned with a VPID of zero, indeed have that VPID value. I cannot recall their VPID ever being other than zero.
  3. TPN 4 from 101W, (actually from D4S or D9S), appears to be dedicated to Local Into Local SD channels. See the LIL TPN MAP tab/page within the Excel.

Thank you. So I assume you mean in the case of DirecTV, SD APIDs are VPID +1 and HD are VPID +2. That would make the APID of Hustler as 1. Would I be right? Also, I assume that ESPN on Tp 11 on 101 West has APID of 000B, given that the VPID is 000A? For Gol TV mentioned previously, which is English and which is Spanish - as Gol TV is one channel with two audio tracks? VPID +1 for English and VPID +2 for Spanish? Thanks again.

BTW keep up the good work :)

From the charts it looks like D9S West (101 West) has even numbered tps only, and D8 has all the odd numbered transponders only. Tp 13 and 9 are on D8 unless the frequency is different. What frequencies are tp 9 and 13 on D9S? If they are the same frequency you may have voltage switching issue - but I cannot obviously be sure.

He's not referring to a problem, but just noting the status of tps. 9 & 13 on the Galaxy 3C satellite at 95W which among others are used for DIRECTV's "World Direct" international programming and received through a specific dish for this service currently have "0" level at this time.
