Wow, would this not be a huge win for D*...:eek2:

DirecTV May Move For Major League Baseball
Wednesday January 3, 10:44 am ET

Frank Barnako (MarketWatch) submits: Little noticed story at year's end says DirecTV (NYSE: DTV - News) wants to do for baseball what it's done for the NFL: wrap up exclusive rights.

Sports Business Journal reported MLB is "in advanced negotiations" for DTV to carry "Extra Innings," MLB's package of out-of-market games. The deal would be "a huge blow to the cable industry," Sports Business Journal said, not to mention that it would also hurt Echostar's (NASDAQ: DISH - News) subscription business. SBJ said Extra Innings growth has stalled at about 750,000 subs via cable.

One reason to believe this story is that Sports Business Journal's latest cover story. It's a profile of Bud Selig, MLB's commissioner. You'd expect that this DirecTV came out of research on the story, either from the Commish himself, or people talking about Selig's management.

An exclusive deal for MLB games not on ESPN or other broadcast/cable networks would be a good move for DirecTV. New subscribers are hard to find. One good way to bolster the rolls is to grab market share, and baseball would be likely to lure some Dish customers.

So MLB wants to know why it only has 750,000 subscribers to its EI package? Maybe they should look at all their ridiculous blackout rules. They're worse than the NFL's.

Most importantly, though, MLB is far different from the NFL in one major respect: they have games 7 days a week. In the NFL, it's only once per week for the most part. That DOES make a difference.
Is there any talk of the Extra Innings package including games in HD?

It is absurd their blackout rules.

In New Orleans, we get blackouts for many Rangers/Astros games....I am not sure I know 2 fans of either team combined here and I have been down here for 20 years
Just for information.

The NFL controls all Televised games.

In the MLB each team controls the broadcast rights to there games. Any package has to get permission from each team and abide by that teams blackout rules. What a mess.

If the money is right, D* could get exclusive broadcast rights. But if they do, I would hope that D* would have some leverage to loosen up the blackout rules. The commissioner of the MLB is not going to do anything that will make the owners unhappy, you can bet on that.
Question: How many games do you all think D* could handle on HD if more teams got them?

A lot? Little?
Most games are on the RSN's. If all the RSN's HD feeds get put on the new sats, then I would think all the games broadcast in HD will be available.
