Engineers at DirecTV confirmed Tuesday that a spacecraft control processor (SCP) aboard the DirecTV 3 satellite switched off on May 4 and is disabled.

As designed, control of the Boeing 601-model satellite was automatically transferred to the spare SCP and the spacecraft is currently operating normally, the company said.

While the backup SCP on DirecTV 3 is designed to operate for the life of the satellite, DirecTV has begun shifting traffic from DirecTV 3 to other DirecTV satellites at its primary orbital slot at 101 degrees as a precautionary measure. DirecTV 3 will become an in-orbit spare.

At no time did DirecTV's more than 10.5 million subscribers experience any loss of service, the company said.

DirecTV maintains in-orbit backup satellite capacity to mitigate the consequences of possible satellite failures. With the successful launch last week of DirecTV 5, DirecTV will have seven satellites in orbit including four satellites at its primary orbital slot at 101 degrees; one at 110 degrees; and two at 119 degrees. DirecTV 7S, the company's second spot-beam satellite, is scheduled to launch in 2003.

Meanwhile, as expected, DirecTV said it will offer local TV packages for its subscribers in Las Vegas and Hartford, Conn., beginning today.

Local channel packages from DirecTV are available to consumers in combination with any Total Choice programming package. The Total Choice Plus with local channels package is available for $39.99 and offers more than 130 channels of DirecTV programming.

Last week, DirecTV said it will broadcast local channels in Buffalo, N.Y., and Oklahoma City by mid-year. The company will add Providence, R.I., in mid-July. DirecTV said it plans to offer local channels in 51 markets by year-end, representing more than 67 percent of U.S. TV households.

Thanks Steve for the article. I haven't had any interruption in service. The locals are another issue....

Is there anywhere on the Internet where I can see which transponders are on which satelite for DTV at 101?

Lyngsat does not specify which transponders are on which satelite (DTV1R, DTV2, DTV3 or DTV4S).

TIA
