DirecTV on an Android tablet.

Supposedly, the Android App does mobile viewing so I put it on my Android phone. Then I learned it only shows PREMIUM channels, none of which I subscribe to. But wait!! It also says it streams shows from the AUDIENCE NETWORK so I tried it. All I got was "stream not available".

Gotta love that advertising hype about "take your DirecTV shows with you"!!

In any event, it is useful for examining the program guide and remotely scheduling shows on your DVR's...but not much else.

I think with the new Viacom agreement , we will see Viacom programing on mobile devices. I thought I read that As Part of the new agreement.

It does stream from the Audience Network, at least on my Galaxy Tab 8.9, running either honeycomb or (now) Ice Cream Sandwich. As far as streaming is concerned, unless you subscribe to a premium channel, Audience is all you will get.

I'm waiting to see the Viacom channels show up, if they ever do. At least it will then have a useful streaming feature.

The guide/remote scheduling feature does work very well and makes the DirecTV app worth adding.

The mobile viewing works fine on my SGII running GB or ICS. Does not work running JB.

Aha! That might be the reason my Android 2.3.3 phone won't stream.

Why don't they detail this on Google Play? Stupid me, it's of course a rhetorical question! :uglyhamme

Jelly Bean. I've run the AOKP version, the "Unofficial" official release, and the kang version of JB. The mobile viewing didn't work on any of those. When I boot into ICS then mobile viewing works fine.
The other features of the app work on all the roms I've tried.
From what I've read MV works on some tablets and not on others running the same Android version. This might be a screen dpi problem.
Obviously my SGII is rooted and has been since I first got it 6 months ago.

Has to be resolution. I've got a never rooted stock Xoom running the official Jelly Bean release, no dice on playback there either.

I am still confused and I apologize for being so dense. I am unfamiliar with all the abbreviations that have been used in responses so I am not really sure if my question has been answered or not.

All I would like to do is watch DirecTV on my unmodified Nexus 7 tablet but it is an Android tablet not an Apple iPad. Is it possible that DirecTV is still working on an app for Android tablet users?

The Nexus 7 uses JellyBean firmware. The DirecTV app doesn't work with JB. Who knows when or if JB will be supported.

p.s., I have a Nexus 7 and really like it! NetFlix works perfectly on it, VUDU is not supported on it. (at least currently)

What you are seeing mentioned with all these abbreviations, are the various iterations of the android operating system.

GB (or Gingerbread) is version 2.3 and appears on phones and tablets.

Honeycomb is version 3.1 or 3.2 and was designed primarily for tablets

ICS (Or Ice Cream Sandwich) is version 4, the current level is 4.0.4 and is used both in tablets and phones, extending the features first offered in Honeycomb.

JB (Or Jellybean) is version 4.1 and the newest version of the Android Operating system and builds on and extends the features offered in ICS.

As others have stated, it appears that the DirecTV app currently doesn't offer streaming for phones or tablets running off Jellybean. I would expect that to change in a future upgrade to the app.

All these abbreviations and version numbers is why you should think about an iPad next time if you're serious about commercial software like this working consistently. Android is great for a lot of things, stability of commercially-developed software isn't one of them.

Hopefully, this won't generate a response of "my tablet is better than your tablet". This is not the place to debate OS or Tablet manufacturers.

The OP had a question about his Nexus 7 and streaming of D* content. Two people kindly answered his question. He didn't ask for an evaluation of iPad vs. Android powered devices for "commercially-developed software", as that might be considered off topic.

I have the released 4.1.1 version of JB on my Google Galaxy Nexus phone and the app errors out on it as well.

Thanks for your input. I was concerned when the topic veered to phones but thought someone may know a phone app that would work on the Nexus 7 tablet. Doesn't look like it.

And, I too am glad the discussion didn't become Apple vs Android. The Nexus 7 is a very good device without the Apple premium. I'm happy.

I'm afraid that I misspoke earlier. Since my tablet upgraded to ICS v4.0.4, it no longer will stream video. The player just crashes.

Under honeycomb v3.2, the player worked fine. I apologize for my error.

Just get a slingbox. Then, you control EVERYTHING and get to see EVERYTHING. I have the SOLO model, and I love it. It works on my phone as well as my android tablet.
