Today on the HR20 in my living room there was a showcase about DirecTV on-demand. It said I need to hook up an ethernet cable to my HR20 to enable it. The only problem is I don't have an ethernet port in my living room, however I do have a Wireless Network throughout my entire home. What would be the best way to take my Wireless signal (802.11 a/b/g Draft n) and get it into my HR20 (I actually have 3 of them so I will need something for each). Thanks!

The Linksys Wireless-N Game Adapter WGA600N would be the easiest solution it seems. The thread URL in 2 posts...

An alterative to wireless is getting a pair of powerline ethernet adapters, DirecTV sells them on their web site. Could be a good alternative if you don't get a strong enough (aka fast) signal with the wireless adapter.

I lied... more questions! (sorry)
For the DirecTV powerline ethernet adapters, do they have the MAC Addresses labeled on the units or are you able to get them somehow? On my network, I use MAC address authentication and IP reservations based upon MAC addresses so I would need them in order to connect the powerline units to my network.

I think the MAC address actually comes from the device connected and that shows up on the Network Setup screen of the HR20 itself.

Although Powerline adapters are good options as well .. Just don't use a surge protector or other conditioning device for the adapter.

sure... is something fantastic coming out soon that would help me out? Can you give me any hints? PLEASE! :D
Doug might be hinting of the long rumored Multi Room Viewing function (watch something recorded on one HD DVR on another HD DVR that's connected to your home ethernet network.

Isn't the 600N (600 Mb/s) overkill? Unless you have a T1 line into your house, you're really limited to a 5-6 Mb/s transfer rate due to the cable modem, DSL, etc.

The WGA54G works just as well given the typical ISP (internet service provider) download limitations. I'm only suggesting the 54G if the cost is cheaper. If it's the same, hey, go with 600N.

The nice thing about the WGA600N (it doesn't do 600MBPS) is the dual band radio capability. I have three 600N's, two on my HD DVR's, and one on an Xbox 360. They all run on the 5 GHz band. Those are the only things on that band (I also have a dual band router.) My laptop and wireless print server run on the 2.4 GHz band, all by themselves. I can easily stream and surf, at the same time.

Also, the setup for the 600N is a piece of cake.

That's all valid if all we're talking about is for access to the internet over consumer grade connections (excluding FIOS). But when media share doing video and the long awaited Multi Room Viewing between boxes coming soon it's good to have that extra bandwidth.

BTW, a T1 is only 1.5Mbps up/down so for the downstream link many consumers have more bandwidth into their homes then a T1 provides.

I just set up ethernet connection to a HR-21 yesterday using the D* powerline modules. The Mac address is printed on the back of the units. Plugged them in and I was done. Could not be easier.

Two modules cost $53 with tax, free shipping. Ordered online at 5 pm Friday and FedEx had them on my doorstep 11 am Monday.

I am finding that my DSL down tx at max. 3 Mbps makes for long download times. But it works.

How big do these files get?

No, my money is that Doug is hinting at the long rumored (mostly by myself) USB wireless networking capabilities that I believe will open up R15 and 16s to the DoD, MRV, internets.

Yes, this is only the ideas of a mad man :hurah: But just wait!
