Satellite television broadcaster DirecTV will launch a new satellite from Kazakhstan next week, the company said on Monday, its seventh orbiting satellite and its first launch from that spaceport.

El Segundo, California-based DirecTV, a unit of Hughes Electronics Corp., said it will launch DirecTV 5 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome next Monday sometime after 1700 GMT. The satellite, formerly known as Tempo 1, was acquired when Hughes bought competing broadcaster Primestar in 1999.

DirecTV has in past launched satellites from a spaceport in the South American city of Kourou and from Sea Launch, a floating platform in the Pacific Ocean.

The company said the new satellite will enable it to expand the number of cities where it offers local channels on a limited basis.

DirecTV, the No. 1 satellite broadcaster in the United States, is in the process of being acquired by No. 2 broadcaster EchoStar Communications Corp.

I would love to see the sea launch platform.... I've never heard of that one.
What would be even cooler is if they could launch an SLV like a Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile from a Submarine.
