DirecTV Inc.'s best consumers and Starz! On Demand customers will get free access to subscription video-on-demand in the fourth quarter, when the DBS company releases the its latest version DVR, company officials said.

The box, co-developed by DirecTV and Tivo Inc., and manufactured by Hughes Network Systems, will offer five Starz! titles a month, residing on a DirecTV-branded page under a 'now playing' label.

The box and subscription services will carry the DirecTV brand; the Tivo logo will only appear on screen where consumers find the content-maneuvering controls.

Wow.. No fee if you have Total Choice! Only a 40 gig HD. I thought the next model would have a larger size HD. $199 to current subs..
40 GB hard drive doesn't seem like much, but since they have 10m+ subscribers and only a small percentage of them have Dtivo, it seems they're aiming for the masses this time and trying to keep the cost low. for many people, it may be enough (at first anyway).

let's just hope it has two tuners and that the hard drive can be upgraded easily so more advanced users can enjoy it too.
UPDATE! - check out the following article... many more details!

How will they justify charging current Directivo customers (with total choice) the monthly fee once this offer starts?
