Well the Stutter/Sputter fest continues. Watching some college Football today, and noticed a few small glitches on ESPNHD, nothing big. During the commercials I jumped around to see what shows were on (2:45 PST approximately), TNTHD "We were soldiers", a complete stutter mess, no way someone could watch it. FXHD "Firewall" same thing as TNT. USAHD "House", not as bad as the other two, but still pretty ugly. I am sorry, but I am paying for HD THAT WORKS, not this crap. I sure hope someone from D* sees and acknowledges this thread, or D* may be in for a rude awakening as people switch to providers that at least work. I know over on AVS there are some very unhappy people with this situation.

The only channel I've seen a video freeze/stutter is ESPN &ESPN2, which may be DVR releated since if I do a 5 sec skip back the place with the freeze/stutter plays through without it.

Might help a little if you mention the full model number of the receiver.
Have you reported this in the appropriate "issues thread" for your model?
HR20-100. No, I have not reported it in the hardware thread, as various people on here with various models have had the issue. This has been going on for a long time. The biggest culprits are TNT, SPIKE (Just try to watch reruns of CSI), and FX, although a fair amount happens with USA, TBS, and many say ABC as well.

It's your receiver, not the broadcasts.

Try RAD's solution of using the 6 second back button a couple times after a channel change so your receiver is watching from the buffer instead of trying to play it live. That should help you until the next national software release which hopefully might fix it for you.

I just posted over there. No, what you are talking about is not it (at least I don't think so). I know about that and I dont think this has anything to do with that. What you are talking about works with audio issues. This is actual video issues where the picture skips along, like a computer dropping frames. For example, if you see someone turn their head, the turn will not be smooth, but jerky, like it is missing frames.

Sounds different, what I see is that the video does a freeze for a second or so, while the audio continues along with no problem, do the skip back and there is no freeze. Only seen this on ESPN and ESPN2.

I'd still TRY the solution I gave if I was you.
Can't hurt, and who knows, you might be surprised.
I'd take a temporary fix over no fix any day.

Or just live with it and pray an update fixes it.

Maybe you should contacting DirecTV. Every time I have problems like that I contact Direct and they always fix it in minutes. That's the best bet. If it is a problem with the Receiver which i think it is, then they'll replace it and most likely free of charge.

I used to get some stutter and then I noticed that I only had problems when I was watching a program from the DVR that was currently being recorded and I was switching between a live TV channel and the recording program.

So I avoid watching a program from the DVR playlist menu while it is being recorded IF I plan on switching back and fourth a lot.

Weird thing is that if I tune in to the channel that is being recorded and switch back and fourth from the live feed I have no problems also.

I have not had a single stutter in over a month.

Gave it a try, didn't fix it. Guess I will have to record it and have Directv come out to take a look.

oh, one last thing. If anyone wants to see if they have the same issue, just watch any CSI re-run on SpikeHD. One person said they have seen a stutter free episode, but I have yet to see one. It happens on recorded stuff too, so you can just set your recorder to record it, and then take a look.

It's probably a defective box or heat related. Try blowing a fan on it. If that doesn't correct it get it replaced. I watch recorded replays of all those channels no problem. If they get too hot they stutter, lock up or fail to record properly. That's why they quit making the hr20-700. It runs way too hot.;)

I still suspect some of these channels are using forms of time compression. With this they can speed up the shows and squeeze in more commercials. Sometimes they can speed up the video and pitch down the audio so it sounds normal but the speeded up video results in missing frames. CSI repeats on Spike-HD suffer from this nearly 95% of the time however, I have seen a few episodes with no video stutter. I don't think it's "our" equipment, I think it's the channels and stations themselves that are causing the video stutter. If you''ll notice, commercials never have video stutter.

What you see on Spike or TNT are problems coming fron the source. CSI Miami on A&E has stutter from day one. I looked at TNT on Dish and it had the same stutter on We Were Soldiers. However ESPNHD and ESPN2HD MPEG4 occasional stutter is coming from D*, since it is not MPEG2 versions. It has gotten little better lately, so maybe they are working on it.

I have never seen a single stutter on any episode of CSI on Spike, live or recorded. And I watch CSI on Spike quite often.

Not everyone has your problem.

In fact, when I do a search using Spike and stutter (CSI is too short to search) as the parameters, I get back 12 replies. Two are from this thread. Three involve Cutting Edge program and Media Share PC playback. The remainder are at least 5 months old, and with no current complaints beyond yours, I question their relevance.

I had a stutter problem back maybe 6-9 months ago, but it went away. I can't remember much about it, frankly.

But your assertion that all CSI broadcasts on Spike for any view have stutter problems is just plain wrong.

I'm not saying you don't have a stutter problem. I'm sure you do. But, as others have pointed out here, I suspect something is defective with your box.

CSI on Spike looks ok. The one that has stutter is CSI New York that Spike just started showing, but it is a source issue as it only happens on that show.

I am seeing what you are seeing. Since others are not, I am not sure what to think. I guess it could be hardware related, but then you and I would have an identical issue, AND the issue shows up on specific channels and is worse in particular shows, while it is fine with other channels/shows. That makes no sense. But I guess the only way to make sure is to have the box swapped out and then see what happens.

I haven't watched CSI NY on Spike, but since you have no issues with regular CSI, but do have problems with CSINY, the mystery deepens.
