I read another article today that stated D* will offer a video-on-demand service. It stated D* will offer about 2,000 movies which will be downloadable via broadband. Is this true? If so, will the HR20 support this new feature?

That's what the Ethernet port on the back is for, if/when it ever happens.

(maybe this is why the tab in "My Playlist" says "My VOD")

Where does it still say MyVod?

It was changed to MyPlaylist in the 0xFA release.

There's a post about Dish Network doing something similar currently plastered on the front page of satelliteguys.

The 2000 programs via the Internet was supposedly announced by DirecTV in February. Here's the link to the story on tvpredictions.com: http://www.tvpredictions.com/directvinternettv022306.htm

It is also available on some of the clipping services. I could not find it on the DirecTV website (their search engine is obviously designed to deliver only carefully selected results). I could not find this announcement among the press releases on the investor site.

Didn't they try this a few years ago? I remember signing up for it but don''t think it ever happened. I thought it was part of the STARS Pack.

The Starz thing was just where the Tivo recorded a show in the middle of the night (without you telling it to), then it showed up in your playlist as 'on demand'. It wasn't really on demand, unless you call 'pre-recorded' something like on demand.

DirecTV to launch online video-on-demand service
By Paul Taylor in New York

Published: February 22 2006 20:36 | Last updated: February 22 2006 20:36

DirectTV, the biggest US satellite TV operator, is to launch a broadband-based video-on-demand service this year to complement its existing satellite VOD service.

The new service, dubbed DirectTV Broadband Video, will launch in the fourth quarter and will offer about 2,000 subscription movies and other content, DirectTV said yesterday.

The move represents a significant push by DirecTV, 34 per cent owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, into the market for internet-based download services at a time when content providers including Walt Disney are beginning to offer their content direct to consumers via the internet, bypassing distribution networks like cable and satellite operators.

DirectTV's download service, which will use existing broadband connections, was one of a string of initiatives unveiled yesterday by DirectTV at its annual analyst and investor meeting in New York. Among the other initiatives, DirectTV ann-ounced plans to expand its footprint in digital homes with services targeting PC users and portable devices.

In addition, the company, racing against cable operators to offer a broad spectrum of high definition programming, said its HD service would cover 36 local markets and 58 per cent of the US by June and 76 per cent of the country by year-end.

By the end of 2007, executives said, DirectTV would be able to deliver up to 150 channels of HD content to virtually all of the market.

Hmm, this sounds great if it happens. What I am not clear about is the ethernet cable. So one end goes into the HR20, where does the other end of the cable connect? I'd have to make it reach the hub on my PC network or what? And people without PCs (are there any? :) ) would be SOL I reckon?

Connect it to a router or if you don't have a PC at all, you could connect it straight to a broadband modem.

Yes, it would have to go to your home network switch/router

No, you wouldn't be SOL... you would still need to get broadband service, and you could connect the HR20 directly to the broadband service.

There are also "wireless" methods that you could use.

I wonder how my DSL ISP, with which I have 3 static IPs, would communicate with this 'foreign' device. As it is, yoiu can only access the net, if your pc has an IP that is assigned to that ISP, be it static or dynamic. So its puzzling. Just food for thought, no doubt they will work that out I guess.

I am far from a network guru so there may be a simple answer I am not aware of.

A Broadband router/gateway that gets the ISP assigned IP and then assigned all
devices a LAN IP.

I hope you are running a business out of your house for you to have 3 dedicated IP's.

TVPredictions.com has reported that the DirecTV broadband VOD service is being pushed back until next spring, and that it won't include any HD content at launch but, will be added later in the year. This story was also mentioned on HDTV podcast #125.

I wonder if this would work with the new internet that I was told about by someone at D*? I was told that they were looking at adding a new internet service some time next year. It would be something like DSL speed over the Sat and would be much cheaper than their internet service they have now. Something around $15 a month.

I believe Malone also has a major interest in WildBlue, the satellite internet provider. If you take that into account when you read this February article, it looks like Liberty Media and Malone had "plans" to be involved in D* way back then. Where I live, WildBlue equipment is installed by the local power company, sure cuts down on installer issues.
