It's always been a challenge for telcos to find their way under the Christmas tree with the other gifts, but this year - thanks to satellite services - Verizon has come up with a Santa Claus option to drive new subscribers this holiday season. The can-you-hear-me-now company announced a deal that takes advantage of DIRECTV, XM and it's own phone and internet service to offer a new bundle the company is hoping will be a huge holiday hit.

Verizon said its bundle of phone service, high speed internet and DIRECTV with XM is a "proven and popular alternative to similar bundles pushed by cable TV companies." What separates this deal from its competitors, the company said, is that Verizon's bundle prices beat cable's non-promotional rates that kick in after a few months of the introductory price tags.

Those welcoming a new HDTV into their homes this season may enjoy Verizon's DIRECTV deal which offers both high-def and other all-digital channels. Verizon customers who select DIRECTV's Total Choice package and who also get their calling and broadband service from Verizon can receive additional discounts of up to $6 off their monthly bills.

DIRECTV's HD package includes ESPN HD, Discovery HD Theatre, HDNet, HDNet Movies, TNT and Universal HD for $9.99 a month. DIRECTV also offers local broadcast networks in HD in select markets. The DIRECTV Total Choice package includes 67 channels of XM Satellite Radio - four of which have been converted to all-holiday programming through Dec. 25.

The changes XM made to its channel lineup is as follows: U-Pop (channel 824) becomes Holly and will serve up contemporary holiday hits and selected traditional holiday favorites; U.S. Country (channel 809) converts to A Nashville Christmas with contemporary holiday hits from country music's biggest stars; XM Pops (channel 866) changes to A Classical Christmas delivering carols and seasonal classics; and Special X (channel 848) will air the lighter side of the holidays with comedy, parodies and seasonal "fun."
