Hello.

We are scheduled for a Dish install (supposedly with a dish 500 dish[?]) on June 1st and we are getting the Top 150 and the Denver locals.

We noted that SOME of the Denver stations claim to need a "2nd dish" Since we are getting the dish 500 will that mean we will get all the Denver channels and Top 150 channels without having to install a 2nd dish? The landlord O.K.'s ONE dish...but he will NOT stand for two dishes.

Sigh.... long story.....

The Dish 500 is actually one dish designed to receive signals from two satellites: 119 and 110. The second dish is for receiving the other Denver stations that non-ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX/WB/UPN/PBS. This is what we hope will be a temporary situation until E*8 is launched. Some of this should be occurring now, but the transfer of locals to spot beams has been placed on hold.

A Dish 500 is a single dish aimed in such a way that it picks up 2 satellite slots, in this case 110 and 119. Denver has 7 locals on Echostar's 148 satellite position, and since a single Dish 500 cannot see all 3 positions you will need a second dish to get them. Echostar is required to give it to you and install it free.

Both dishes can be mounted together with a little effort, and the installer SHOULD set up both during the initial install. However, this is Echostar you're dealing with , and since they have dragged their feet on giving second dishes away since "must carry" started, the installer will probably set up the Dish 500 and tell you to call Echostar and get on the waiting list for your free second dish install (about 2-4 months from now).

You will need a 2nd dish to get all of your locals. You should be getting 2 dishes, as the FCC has ordered Dishnetwork to install a second dish. You should have gotten DIRECTTV which doesn't require a 2nd dish/

The second dish requirement is a temporary situation. Later this year you should be able to get everything on your single dish. If you're willing to wait a few (maybe 6) months, you and your landlord will both be happy. You should be able to get the most-watched stations now with the single dish.

Opinion Mode On:

All this "temporary" talk does not originate from DISH Network. They have said or done nothing which indicates this is a temporary situation.

One possibility is, the merger is approved and some transtitioning program gives a single dish solution. Don't expect this to be in place within a year. Kind of long for a "temporary" solution.

The rumor is all locals will go on spots. It won't happen as they just will not fit. EchoStar 7 and EchoStar 8 were designed as though must carry would not be a reality.

If this was really a "temporary" solution, the new Grand Rapids, Michigan locals would all be at 119 and/or 110 (some are at 61.5w). There certainly is some available space at 110 since some have moved from there to EchoStar 7 spots.

Your "temporary" 2nd dish may be quite rusty when it is not needed anymore.

No one knows if the second dish is temporary or not. I would get it while it is free. Then even if the locals are moved you will have access to whatever is at the 148 location in the future.

Nice to see other people from Denver around here! Yes, you will need a second dish to see the additional 7 local channels that we have here. KWGN (2), KCNC (4), KRMA (6), KMGH (7), KUSA (9), KTVD (20), and KDVR (31) are all on the 110 satellite, so you will be able to get them with a dish 500 dish. The other locals are on the 148 satellite which requires the 2nd dish.

Actually, we used to have DirecTV...but couldn't get NASA (and a couple of others, I think) because we needed a second dish!!!

The area of Wyoming that we moved to disqualified us for the "movers" special (after we kept our account active for a year)...since it is an NRTC....and getting DirecTV appeared to be more difficult. (All we had to do to get DISH was call them up. DirecTV we had to call an electric company on the other side of a mountain range....)

After our one-year committment is up with DISH, we may see what promotions DirecTV has going. Since with our DISH deal we don't own the equipment, we won't have to have a dish and reciever collecting dust like our DirecTV equipment now is.

We have somewhat of a bad taste for DirecTV after waiting a year for the movers special only to find out that we didn't qualify!!!!! <grrrrrrrrrr>

While getting a second dish for 119 is an option, you could have replaced the 18" DirecTV dish with a 24" eliptical DTV Plus dish which sees 101 and 119. So you could get the NASA channel with only 1 dish from D*.

and it kinda depends what's showing on these independant stations...here in dallas, you get a LOT of baseball, basketball, soccer, and hockey on the 148 stations(games that are slated for the independants but not for the local fox sports channel)-this is a real problem here if you want to be able to watch the rangers, westwing, and evie torkleson-the tech just can't handle the set up...not good thinking on the part of E*...

Remember that the landlord may not have much say in the number of dishes you have, provided they fit the OTARD rules and are located in an exclusive use area of the property you are renting:

Nancy, have you checked out DishNetwork's locals/distant nets qualifying page? If not, go here to determine what locals or distant nets you qualify for, and whether the locals you want are accessible with the Dish 500 (sats 110/119), or if you will need a second dish for 148.

Actually, KWGN is on the 119 satellite and will remain CONUS for the forseeable future, as it is a Superstation and available nationwide from Dish.

Yes....we did check the qualifications....we could get Dishnets ABC, FOX and (probably PBS). We did notice that the main Denver stations are available without the additional dish, but we just hate to have something available that we are paying for and not be able to get it.

Our son works in Yellowstone and qualifies for the NY and LA Nets from DirecTV...For now...we are just happy to live in Wyoming!!!
