Beginning today, EchoStar's DISH Network will begin offering local channels via satellite to its viewers in Grand Rapids, Mich.

With the addition of Grand Rapids, DISH Network now offers local channel packages in 37 cities. Local channels are available through the satellite TV service for $5.99 a month.

In launching local TV service to the Grand Rapids area, EchoStar acknowledged the efforts of the Michigan Congressional delegation, with special thanks to Rep. Fred Upton, "who in his capacity as chairman of the Telecommunications and Internet Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee has worked tirelessly to promote competition and consumer choice in all telecommunications sectors," the company said in a statement.

Earlier this week, DirecTV said it would launch a local TV package for its Grand Rapids viewers in mid-July

The only bad thing is that Dish will not carry the PAX / WB channel or the UPN. It seems DirecTV will. Dish really should add those 2 channels to make it worthwhile to have Grand Rapids locals available.
