Dish DVR

My grandmother has Dish family and she called yesterday about upgrading her standard receiver to a DVR. They told her she would have to pay 50.00 plus the 5.00 a month for DVR service.I want to know what the 50.00 dollars would be for because all of dishnets promos say they offer a free DVR. I guess I need to know if she can get a standard DVR free? Thank you.

Promos are usually for new customers only. Depending on how long is left in the commitment, maybe some dealing can happen?

How much if she had to pay regular price?
She needs to call Dish back and see if there are any other promotions (might include extending her commitment period) to reduce the cost for the upgrade.
Ok,I'll what I can do for her. Thank you.
What model of DVR are they going to upgrade her to? There should be at least 5 model of DVR they could upgrade her to 522/625/612/622 & 722, they may even still have some 510's in the leasing system still. All but the 510 are dual tuner DVRs so she could also be subject to a $5 additional outlet fee on top of the $5.98 DVR fee.

She needs a dual tuner, I'm not familiar with dish receivers at all. What DVR should she ask for. She doesn't need anything special just a standard dual tuner DVR.
I ASSUME your grandmother hasn't already created an account login on the DISH website. If that is the case, you could create one for her (you'd need to know the Receiver number or stuff from one of her bills) and login yourself and see her choices with price. Not all customers will see the same prices, but what I see for my own account when I login is
2 TV
Two Rooms of Service
(or "Picture in Picture" for 1 TV)

Standard Definition Receiver
$25 Shipped
$75 Installed

Enhanced DVR Receiver
for additional hours of recording space
$50 Shipped
$100 Installed

High Definition Receiver
$50 Shipped
$100 Installed
Usually, they will insist on the Installed option when there is only a single tuner receiver that has been there for a while (no DishPro Plus LNB to support a dual tuner receiver on a single coax). If they are quoting $50 for a dual tuner DVR (522 or 625), she'd get a better deal that I would. They MIGHT be quoting $50 for a single tuner 510 (isn't even listed as a choice for me). That wouldn't require an Install because it is a single tuner replacing a single tuner.

Thank you so much for the information. I'll create an online account and check out my options. Thanks again.

A 522 is the "oldest" DVR model that can be leased. You can only get a 510 as an RA, or possibly from a local dealer who still has them in inventory.
Call D* and see what they can do for her. Then call E* and tell them about the deal they offered, tell them you would like to cancel your E* account you will be transfered to an account specialist, explain to this person VERY NICELY your sitiuation and why you need to cancel because D* can help you out cheaper. They will review the account and make a decision on what typeof best deal they can offer you. Just remember to be very nice to these people, they have a tough job where most people they deal with are rude. They very much like it when someone treats them with respect, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
