I have a RV that is permanently parked at a site way out in the woods and because I can't get TV reception via antenna I thought a satellite dish would be the way to go.
The problem is I can't justify spending a ton of money on a system that I will use 1 weekend a month or so. The other problem is that I have talked to both Dish and Direct an they want to sell me all the bells and whistles and all I want is something to kill some time at night, like local channels, sports, etc... I don't care for all the kid channels either.
I know this is a RV out in the woods and it's suppose to be a place to relax and get away but I still have the desire to watch the old boob tube.
I need some advise from people that know what is going on. BTW, I have Comcast at home so this will be the only dish I will be using as I plan on keeping Comcast at home
Thanks, Jim

Here's what I would do.

Get rid of cable at home, install Dish.... and buy an extra antenna and take your receiver with you when you go to your RV.
I had given that some thought but I have my tv, phone and internet service with Comcast and hate to lose out on the savings, service and speed of Comcast at home.
I guess worst case senerio would be to watch dvd's but would like to watch news and other things. Guess that is the price to pay for having a placr out in the woods.

how far is the woods from your house?
what about geting a sling box. than you can watch on your Laptop your favour programs that you pre record from your cable box, also you can go to Bestbuy they have the sling box they will explain you how it works, you also can google Sling box and see how it works.

How much of a do-it-your-self'er are you? You could pick up a used dish with a used SD receiver, install it yourself, subscribe to locals and pay an access fee. You'd have to have line of sight to the locals satellite, of course. I live in the woods and getting los to various satellites can be a pain.

My house is 20 miles away from the rv.

I have looked on Craigslist at some of the used stuff and wondered about doing that but I am so new to this dish stuff and really don't know what I can and can't get and don't want to be taken either.

You're best bet would be to find a dealer who has some equipment to sell and who would do the install. Might cost a bit, though, depending on how far out in the woods. You could see what you could do with Dish to buy an SD receiver with an install but no contract.

Your best bet is to call a local installer, that is close to the rv, if the rv is 20 miles from your house and, your house is in an area that is populated enough to have comcast cable, then I am sure that you should be able to find an installer close enough that would not charge to much extra for the rv install. Make sure that you inform them you wish to get locals because you will not be able to on a prepaid box. You can still purchase your own equipment, in 2003 I purchased my first 301 and a dish 500 dish for $149 at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart does not sell them anymore but, I doubt that a setup like that would cost much more now from a retailer.
