Dish/LNB replacement to resolve 771 Searching for Sat Signal?

1719 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  litzdog911
Hello Everyone,

I have an installer coming Tuesday to replace my 5LNB dish (I requested an LNB replacement) to eliminate the Search for Sat 771 error on my HR20. All other DTV boxes are fine, including an H20-600.

My question is should I just wait for the next s/w upgrade (I believe this is an s/w related code issue, but I am trying to eliminate all possibilities)? I would not be very happy (neither would my wife :nono: ) if they replace the dish and the problem became even worse. I just don't want to waste time unnecessarily.

On a separate note, I have also heard that the Andrews LNBs are sub-standard and should be replaced, maybe I get the new Slimline since it is available in my area. I will call my installer to verify availablility.

Your thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Peace and blessings,

Azeke

If you're only having this problem on the HR20, I'm betting it's an HR20 problem, not your dish. Other folks have reported this problem, so it could be software. Also, be sure to remove your B-Band Converter modules because some of them are defective and might cause this problem. Personally I would wait until after the next software update.

Not sure where you heard that the Andrews LNB's are "sub-standard". I haven't heard that.
I've already tried to remove the BBCs, no success there. Currently, I am using the workaround, go to the channel (receiving the Sat error) go to another channel like 70, and jump back to the previous channel, voila Sat error is gone. That seems like a s/w error to me, I am not a programming geru however, it certainly seems related to the programming code.

I'm going to call the installer and see if they have the Slimline, if not I may cancel the installation. Thanks for your reply.

I have both BBC's installed since day one 2 months ago, and never had this message appear. Not once, not ever..

I've had major dish issues since my install 10 days ago because of the high winds we've had here. The wind has shifted the dish which causes us to lose the signal getting that message on the screen. Fortunately I can easily get to the dish and have been able to manipulate it enough to get the signal back. However the message remains on the screen. So each time I just change the channel and something must reset because the message then will disappear and I can go back to the channel I was on previously.

With the wind we've had in the Baltimore area this has occurred three or four times now ( someone is coming out to realign the dish ). The message is correct - the signal goes out because of the wind but the message doesn't automatically reset once the signal is reestablished. But again, changing the channels does work each time. I assume a software update may correct this in the future.

I had the same problem after my initial "professional" installation. I had my new AT9 dish replaced and also replaced the HR20 receiver (D* insisted that it was a defective dish or receiver). Still got the error. In the end, I checked continuity myself for all 4 cable runs from the dish to the multiswitch (all new cable) and found a bad connection on 1 of the 4 cables. Replaced the cable end myself - problem solved. Not sure if it's the same cause, but worth a check.
There are so many variables that can cause this problem that a single solution will not solve "everyone's" (searching for signal..........) problem!

"Litz" is right, Azeke's problem is with the box! Either software, or a bad tuner! I have the same problem, it's more of a nag than a real problem! If it's happening on an MPEG4 chnl only, and you can clear it, by switching to a non MPEG4 chnl then switching back then it's the HR20! I hope this is a software fix and after they figure out the other "real" issues, they can work on this! I'd just sit back and wait, new dish or LNB probably will not correct this!!

Amen brother

This thread reinforces your point in more detail....

When it comes to "issues" with the HR20, there is often a "rush to judgment" on its cause.
Here is the lastest update, which has been placed in other related post/forums as well:

OK, here's my story:

After three tech visits, I came to the conclusion that this was either a HR-20 s/w issue, or a LNB issue. I called DTV and requested a 5LNB replacement, that said we must replace the whole dish, I said OK fine. Tech came yesterday, on time, and said he is only suppose to check and trouble-shoot, I said I mad a request to have the Dish replaced. He provided a million reasons why the Dish replacement will not correct the problem. I said, look call your supervisor, and I will call Directv, once he contacted his supervisor, he supervisor said give the customer whatever he request, finally. I said look my Dish is fine (stable through 50 mile/hr winds), I didn't feel confident with him replacing the whole dish, so I said just replace the 5 LNBs. The LNBs were replaced I recycled the box including setting up the SAT again, voila, no more Searching for SAT Signal 771, and he said it wouldn't work  .

I know that there are many variables to consider when trying to resolve this problem, but this certainly seems to be the solution for me, at least for now. Hopefully, the next s/w download will not change anything  . Your mileage of course may vary.

I am a happy camper at least for now :) .

Peace and blessings,

Azeke
