I have a 4 yo Model 4000 and it is getting worse and worse about blanking out the video display. It mostly hapens on FX and History and a few others. Is this a "feature" of the 4000 or what ? My 4700 does not behave this way.

thanks,
Edude

It is not that bad :)

Surely slower then newer models, but is working ok...
No Blanking out...
the only thing - when changing channels sometimes - screen goes black for a sec or 2..like it is strugling to get the channel..
but then channel appear..
when channel is on - no problems...
this doesn't happen all the time...

oh, well - still somewhat prestigious oldie :)
Has Timers and UHF remote and UHF antenna after all - lol
(by the way i am using for it - Blue buttons UHF remote from newer model machine - so i get "page by page" with thie blue one) I do not really like old style Remote controls..and greatly prefer the blue buttons ones.. ( if ever have older style one - i always try to get rid of it and replace it with Blue Button one - hehe..

When ever my 4000 used to act this way, I would unplug it for a few minutes and plug it back it and all would be well for quite some time. My 5 year-old 4000 has been behaving quite nicely for over a year.

See ya

I went through a few 4000's and this one has been working for a long time now. I had to "fight" with E* to get replacement receivers for S&H only thanks to a tip and phone number from a poster from www.dbsdish.com a long time ago. I wish I remembered the man's name who gave me this tip and saved me from spending my money to replace the 4000 at my expense.

The blackouts on the 4000 really sucked!

I bought two 4000's a good while back from eBay sellers and they've worked flawlessly. The 4700 was the "state of the art" at the time, but I needed the data port the 4000 provides.

The only things the 4000 data port is good for is a DD module.
If you have/get a 4700, DD is included, so why the need ???

Well, I cycled power, pulled the smartcard and waived a rubber chicken over my head and it seems to works fine , for now. I'm not buying or fixing any DN hardware, as my plans are to go with two Direct Tivo Series 2 's in Dec when my yearly is up with Dish.

A company named Data Broadcasting Corporation that now delivers financial quotes via the Internet used to offer satellite delivery via DISH Network. The service used the data port on a DISH receiver. The 4700 doesn't have the port, but the 4000 does. IIRC, the data was available on channel 550 for those who subscribed. A module attached to the data port had a serial port computer interface.

I don't know if satellite delivery of the data is still an option, but eventually DBC migrated its users to the Internet.

DISH may also still deliver other data services this way. I know another product existed a few years ago, but I don't recall what it was.

Did you waive the rubber chicken in a clockwise direction or counter-clockwise? You know it makes a difference. :D

counter-clockwise, of course.....

>delivers financial quotes via DISH Network

Yeah, that makes as much sense as using a 4700 with Open TV to play computer games, why bother when a 486 is 2x faster.

haha - cool!

thanx for letting me know this..
all this time and i didn't know...now the old remote will have more value to me - if i see one :)

But still i like the blue buttons better somehow...

the only other thing that would be i guess nice in the "older" one - would be - separate VCR buttons on the bottom of remote
(that now i find out share page up/down anyhow - lol)

So are you absolutly sure about "page by page" (FF and REW) thingy?
Any one please confirm that - cuz i do not have that "old" remote here to try....

thanx

well - maybe - as of late 4000 seems to work strange a bit,
cuz they are giving out software upgrades currently..

mine took new one - it is now 761 to replace 760...

maybe my imagination, but it behaves somewhat faster now..
few weird things - that i do not want to expand on now...
But anyone knows what the major new things in this upgrade..?

I noticed one thing though - when made Switch check for my sw21 - it went through 34 Switch check..!!!???
This is very strange - cuz oll the time before - including software 760 - it was 26 check (i think)...but definatly was not 34..
Now it is 34..i think the same way as 3900, etc models...

Anyone knows or have some info on that?? - cuz my understanding was that older machines, with "000", ex: 3000, 4000, etc plus some others...were not capable of 34 switch checks period...
and therefore were not capable of Cascading, joining switches together and those kind of things...

Please share your thoughts..

thanx

That other service is (was) "AgCast", an agricultural futures ticker. That service was the first DBS delivered data service.
