Yes you will need 2 sererate cables coming in from the switch to each 721.

I am having an installer come out and I want to upgrade to the Dish PVR721 when ever it comes out. I have talked to Dish and I get two different stories. Do I need to run 2 cables from the dish to the receiver for the PIP and to record one show and watch another? Or do I need just one cable to PVR721? One tech said only one and the receiver will spilt the signal another couple of techs have said no you need to run 2 cables. Thanks in advance for your help.

When you say switch do you mean the hook ups in the back of the DishPVR721?

Yes, you will need two cables from your multiswitch, Steve is correct. To clarify for you, the multiswitch is a device that switches between satellites and distributes the LNBF (Low Noise Block-down converter with integrated Feedhorn) outputs to each receiver. You may not have a multiswitch, if you have a DISH Twin or Quad LNBF. In this case you will have an integratedswitch. The most tuners you can connect is two to the Twin and four to the Quad. The Twins are VERY common. In this case (a Twin LNBF) you could only have one receiver - the 721, without an LNBF upgrade (to normal LNBFs or DISHPro LNBFs, plus an additional switch)

I am confused. Several questions: If I purchase a 721 and that is the only receiver I have, do I still need two lines from the LNBF? Are the questions above about 2 receivers or about being able to tape two shows with the one 721 receiver? How do I know if I have twin or Quad? I have the standard dish 500 that I upgraded several years ago. Does that tell me anything?

The 721 will (most likely) need to have 2 separate lines connected to it to drive the 2 tuners. Those lines need to be 2 separate lines from your switch, or 2 separate lines from your twin or quad lnb. If you have a twin lnb, you have either 1 or 2 cables coming out of the dish that run directly to your receiver(s). There are no switches connected to them unless you are cascading in a 2nd dish pointed at 61.5 or 148. If you have a quad lnb, then you have up 4 lines coming out of your dish straight to your receiver(s). If you have 2 dual lnbs, then you have 2 lines coming out of each lnb (meaning 4 lines out of dish) connected to a switch or switches, and then lines coming out of the switch going to your receiver(s). Also, if you take a close look at your dish, you will be able to tell if you have 2 lnbs installed, or 1 twin or quad installed. If you upgraded several years ago, you definitely don't have the quad, and most likely don't have the twin.
