Hello,

I was a DirectTV customer, but just changed to Dishnet to get a package deal to get my monthly price down. I don't get my Dishnet install until a more days.

I will be going camping before I have time to look around for a good camping dish for my tripod. But I have one of the old 18" dishes for a single satellite. Thanks to a forum sticky here I see that I can get my locals in SD on 119 and a lot of the core programming is also on 119.

So here is my problem/question. They are installing two DVR HD receivers and I plan on taking one of them camping. I would like to know if the newer receivers are compatible with old 18" round dish?

I don't have a lot of time to find another dish for now, but I will be looking for a dish 500 twin, or the 1000.2 in the future. But for this trip I'm just hoping to get a few channels and my locals with what I have. I know a lot more about Directv and I have a Digisat III Pro signal meter, but I'm on a crash course for Dishnet for now.

I'm sure I can figure out alignment and I will have 1 day to try it, but that won't leave anytime left if I need to get a different dish so I'm trying to get a few days jump on this.

Thanks everyone,
James

It will work in theory, but you may want to make sure you have a dual lnb (two output connections) and is from Dish, if it is Legacy or DishPro you need to make sure you can feed both inputs on the receiver since Dish's HD dvr receivers have two inputs. If it is a DishProPlus, the DPP separator will work with one coax to feed both tuners.

Thanks for the info Garys,

It is one of the old original dish and lnb, the lnb has only one output. I'm hoping I can use it in one input and leave the other input open?

I know I can only watch one channel and not record another this way. It does work this way on my Directv DVR HD receiver this way. My Directv reciever has a setting for the 18" round dish in the satellite setup.

Thanks again,
James

I'm not sure what receivers I'm getting, at the time I ordered Dishnet I knew even less then I do now. I was just looking at the FAQ sticky here and I would guess I'm getting the 612 receivers.

I told him I wanted two HD recievers that both had DVR's. They are for two single HD tv's in different rooms. I think the hopper-joey does all its recording on the hopper? And maybe the DUO dvr goes to two different tvs? Anyways I'm pretty sure its not the Hopper/Joey.

I just looked at my work sheet and all it says is $6 for the DVR and $7 for the extra receiver. Also I got the 120 package, and the work sheet said free HD with auto pay.

Thanks again,
James

If you are getting charged $7.00 for the second receiver then it is not a DVR min DVR fee for the second one is $14.00 or $17.00 can not remember which. But $7.00 is for a plan old receiver.

DvR is normally 10, making the extra receiver 17$ with the dvr fees added.

You may need to call in and fix that. Per what you have posted, you're getting a vip612 HDDVR and a vip211 HD non-DVR receiver. If you want two HDDVR, you'll want 2 vip612; the second one is $100 up-front and $10 a month instead of $7.

And, you will want to buy a Dish Network Dish 500 with a DPPTwin LNB, then bring one 612 with it's separator camping. The dish you describe will probably not give you what you need.

An alternative is to keep what you have, and buy a Tailgater to use with the 211 HD receiver. You can make that a DVR by adding an external hard drive and have Dish bill you a 1-time $40 enabling fee.

On Vip's the dvr fee is still $6, Hopper it was added to the Whole Home fee making it $10. As far as additional receivers, $7 would be for a one tuner receiver, the 612 is two tuners but only has one output and would be $10. It would seem the csr either used an old sheet and only quoted the outdated dvr rate on the H/J or forgot the dvr on the second tv.

Hello again, and thanks for the heads up on the wrong second receiver.

I talked to them and i was only setup for one DVR, so I changed that to two DVR recievers. Now up updated bill is DVR $12 (two six dollar charges) and extra reciever fee is still $7

I asked him if it was the 612 receivers and he wasn't sure so he went in back and looked at one and then confirmed it was the 612.

I am aware that the 612 has two channel inputs, but I'm still hoping to hook up my old 18" round dish with a single output LNB to one of the inputs and leave the other input open to get a few channels off of 119 for my vacation. I have done this with my Directv DVR receiver before. It tells me that there is no signal on one input but it still works.

My son-in-law is a roofer so I will be able to come up with a better dish later.

Thanks again everyone,
James

The rates quoted are still wrong there is only one DVR fee per account and for 612 it is $6 but the 612 is $10/mo. not $7. Unlike Directv DVRs DISH dual input DVRs must have both inputs connected to identical satellite inputs to work correctly. They will produce watchable pictures with only one tuner connected but they usually do strange things when only one input is live, the longer it is missconnected the greater the chances are of having reception problems.

Thanks Boba, that is what I needed to know. And thanks for the heads up on the pricing, I thought they still had it messed up. I'll make sure I'm here for the install to make sure they put in the right receivers.

Ok, I'll start my search for better dishes now. I take it I will need a Dish 500 twin (using two wires) or a Dish 500 DPP using one wire and a separator. Or a Dish 1000.2 Also I seen a dish at the store that just said Dish HD on it, Is that the same as the 1000.2 ?

Correct me if I'm wrong on compatible dishes.

Thanks again,
James

With HD and being you are in Oregon, you should get either a 1000.2 or 1000.4 dish with a WA lnb (depending on line of site) with one coax run to each receiver and a DPP Separator on each to feed both tuners.
