Yesterday while comparison shopping between DirecTV, Dish and Time Warner Cable, the Dish rep told me that DirecTV's HD hardware is not MP4 ready so my upfront investment in D* HD hardware will be lost "during the transition to MP4 later this year".

To what extent is this true?

It is really getting to be dog eat dog. D* already has MPEG4. He must be talking about people that have not upgraded to the H20 or HR20. In that case I guess he is correct. However, I dont see MPEG2 going on the scrap heap real soon. All the basic programing will probably remain on MPEG2 sats for some time to come, at least until D* has replaced all older receivers.

If he's talking about any equipment that you can get retail today it's flat out untrue. ALL of the current DirecTv equipment (HD) is MPEG 4 .

Directv already has 2 satellites delivering MPEG4 broadcasting and 2 more scheduled for launch in 2007 by the end of 2007 Directv will surpass DISH in MPEG4 HDTV capability. Right now both DISH and Directv each have 2 models of HDTV receivers for sale that are MPEG 4 compatible. DISH has the 211 and the 622 and D* has the H20 and HR20.

Absolutely untrue. D* was providing MPEG4 HD LiL months before E* ever got its act together. Just compare the startup dates on the EKB HD LiL lists and the D* HD LiL list.

I have an older (2yrs) Hughes HD receiver. I do get my locals and other Direct HD offered channels. I was told that when the new birds go up. My unit will be obsolete. Since I am an "A+" customer. They are giving me an H20 at no cost.

I would expect nothing less from the Dish rep. I would be really surprised if he did anything other than bad-mouth the competition...:nono2:

D* is poised to one-up Dish this year, as far as HD goes, according to what they SAY will happen. They have their work cut out for them. If their sat fleet is completely launched and reliable, they work the bugs out of their receivers, they neg. the contracts for the content, and fix their HSP network, they will be #1, like I said, they have their work cut out for them.

According to the press relase they already have 70 signed or statements of intent to sign, sounds like D* is on their way to one uping all the providers. I also heard they have already gotten rid of one of their dealers so maybe they are listning to the complaints from customers as well.
