Shouldn't this be in the Dishnetwork forum?

Now it appears ATT is trying to cause a bidding war between DISH and DirecTV? I did not see DirecTV cared much then, nor does DISH seem to care about it now.

IMHO, DISH's stock price was over priced earlier in the year because of the rumor about ATT buying DISH, it is finally back to the norm now that we know ATT is really out of the game, DISH or DirecTV.

I think both DirecTV and DISH are correct to tell ATT to take a hike. The ATT Uverse TV service is no comparison to DBS. Only one or two HD streams at the same time, are you kidding me? Either do what Verizon is doing, spend the money and wire fiber optics to my house, or get out of the way.

Good point, I never bother looking at the Dish forum. I have not been following this but when I saw the news and its impact on the stock price I thought it warranted discussion.

Thanks for your feedback

This issue does impact Directv. If Dish cannot or will not renegociate with ATT then Directv will be able to step in and fill the void that Dish left. Dish is in a world of hurt and needs ATT but if they do not generate subscriber growth that hurts ATT and DIRECTV is growing subscribers without ATT. It will be interesting to see what happens.

AT&T Ending Dish Network Partnership at Year-End
Setting up a bidding war between Dish and DirecTV?

Some more info and discussion at http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/ATT-Ending-Dish-Network-Partnership-at-YearEnd-95730

I guess we saw this one coming after AT&T dropped D* from the old BellSouth territory. It will be interesting to see what will happen. Of course AT&T has now filed with TN for state franchise to build out U-Verse since the new law went into effect yesterday.

I don't see anything new here. AT&T has always said that their decision to drop D* as the partner was due to contracts with E* that went to the end of 2008. They would reevaulate the situation and either continue with E* or switch to D* at that time. From what I've seen the notice that AT&T has given E* now gives them freedom to make any change quickly at the end of the year.

There are 3 things coming into play:

1) First, Bellsouth had a long-standing co-marketing arrangement with DirecTV for many years. Both companies and their customers benefited from that relationship.

2) When AT&T took over the "old" Bellsouth, that agreement was terminated, and replaced by a one-year one with Dish. Apparently, the grass was not as green on the Dish side as it originally was with DirecTV. They may try to get back with DirecTV.

3) There have been rumors floating around that AT&T wants to make "some kind of investment" with Liberty, specific to DirecTV. It's only rumor, mind you.

In my area (B'ham, AL), AT&T (formerly Bellsouth) still has the relationship with DirecTV and not DISH. They will bundle me with home phone, cellular, Internet at DirecTV. I choose to deal with D* directly, so I get a simple $5/mo credit via AT&T.

A bidding war between Dish and DirecTv? Some one must have gotten a hold of the good stuff. :smoking:

Since when has Dish even tried to outbid anyone. Let's think back shall we; NFLST - nope, MLBEI - nope again, ect.

So the bids are as follows:
DirecTv $0.01
Dish $0.00

Winner: DirecTv.

Notifications went out some time ago that the former Bellsouth credits will end 12/31/08, unless a new one is signed.

It appears that with the Dish termination on that same day, and since that one is more recent and short term, perhaps they are thinking of getting back on the DirecTV bandwagon with a new agreement.

DirecTV Could Win Big at AT&T
By Jeff Baumgartner, Site Editor, Cable Digital News, JULY 02, 2008

Analysts are already speculating that DirecTV Group Inc. could be the "big winner" after Dish Network Corp. revealed in an 8-K filing Tuesday that AT&T Inc. will terminate its partnership with Charlie Ergen's direct broadcast satellite (DBS) service at the end of 2008. (See 8-K: AT&T Scraps Dish Deal.)

DirecTV "is now increasingly likely to supplant Dish as AT&T's DBS partner," Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Inc. analyst Craig Moffett predicted in a note issued Tuesday afternoon. "AT&T has indicated that the termination is 'procedural' in nature. A six-month notice of termination was required under the contract in order to reopen renegotiations between Dish and AT&T, and presumably, DirecTV and AT&T as well."

With negotiation leverage clearly in hand, AT&T isn't closing the door on satellite TV. "We continue to discuss options with DISH," AT&T said in a statement.

AT&T is also pushing ahead aggressively with its own IPTV video service, U-verse. AT&T added 148,000 U-verse subs in the first quarter, giving it a total of 379,000. The telco anticipates signing up more than 1 million U-verse customers by the end of 2008. U-verse presently passes about 9 million homes, and AT&T expects to push that past 30 million by the end of 2010.

AT&T's decision to scuttle the Dish deal pours cold water on earlier speculation that it might strike a merger with Dish, but the telco's decision to scrap the current deal isn't a big surprise. Last month, Dish, in a different 8-K filing, disclosed that AT&T was requiring the DBS company to pay back a $500 million note, rather than convert the debt to equity.

But the possible long-term loss of an AT&T partnership "strikes a heavy blow to Dish Network, which is already suffering from a steep decline in net additions," Moffett added. Dish added 35,000 net new customers in the first quarter of 2008, off a staggering 89 percent from the prior year period. Dish ended the first quarter with 13.8 million subs.

AT&T has offered a Dish bundle since 2003. Moffett estimates that the deal contributes as much as 15 percent of the satco's gross additions, but news of a forthcoming end to the telco partnership comes as Dish's net-to-gross add ratio is well below the 15 percent mark. "As such, the loss of AT&T would very likely put Dish Network into negative subscriber growth territory in 2009," the analyst surmised.

Once the AT&T deal is done, Dish will be left with one major telco bundling partner: Embarq Corp. Dish also has a deal with CenturyTel Inc.

Dish shares were down $2.20 (7.56%) to $26.91 each at the close of trading Wednesday.

I was actually surprised this thread is here in the first place, as I thought stock talk was prohibited. But guess what? I didn't see it mentioned in the User Agreement!

From an installer point of view, I hope Directv doesn't ever hook up with AT&T again. 8 out of 10 Bellsouth/AT&T were gauranteed to be screwed up. Nothing like driving 50 miles or more to a 1 standard receiver install only to find out when you get there that the customer "ordered 4 rooms with a HDDVR." Or better yet, getting to the "customers" house and being told, "I'm not getting Directv installed today, the lady on the phone said you would come by and give me the information and prices so I can think about it and decide if I want to get it or not."

We do have a thread that some of you have participated in over in the DISH forum:
AT&T Terminates Reseller deal with Dish

That thread approaches the issue from a better angle and avoids the "stock talk" angle (huh, that should be in the rules).

Closing this thread as a duplicate / off-topic.
