Hello all, I just have a few questions to make up my mind. I recently tried to get the dish hopper and I needed 2 of them because my wife and I have a hd TV in the living room and my oldest daughter who lives at home has one in her bedroom.our daughter needs her own hd dvr to record her own shows because she likes certain shows than we do ,so needless to say one hopper wouldn't be enough.Dish said no you can only have to have 1 hopper and a joey per 2 TVs.so i would have to have 4 TVs to get the 2nd hopper. anyway, what direct hd dvr receivers would work best in my case and how many shows can be recorded at one time with what receiver?I plan on getting the top package and all. thank you so much for all your help in advance.

The HR20-24 can each record 2 things at once. The HMC HR34 can record 5 things at once (unlike Hopper it can be anything) but I don't believe they are making it easy to have more than one. You can have one HR34 and one HR24 for example.

With Directv you have two options as I see them. I am an installer so here goes. First call you local authorized retailer and ask a lot of questions. You will get more personal service and you will understand the english that is spoken.

Option 1. Get two DVRs. This WILL cost you extra up front. Directv offers one DVR free, but if you want a second, you will pay. The person on the phone will let you know the prices. Two DRVs will give you 4 tuners to record with.

Option 2. Get the new HMC receiver and one HD/non-DVR receiver like a H25. The HMC has 5 tuners. Get the whole home service and the H25 will be able to access the recordings from the HMC receiver. Again the HMC receiver will cost you an up front fee and the sales person will be able to tell you about those.

Authorized retailers are the best way for you to buy local if that is important to you.

With whole-home service, each of the DVRs (or non-DVR receivers) will be able to watch recordings from the other one (DVR) (as well as it's own). It is possible that the HR34 and just a receiver (as opposed to DVR) for your daughter would be sufficient (she could schedule and view recordings from the HR34).

Or, alternately, you could simply get two regular DVRs (not the HR34). Those would each have two tuners (they can each record two shows at one time, or record one while watching something else live).

So you actually have several options to consider. Up front cost will be different for each, but the monthly recurring cost would be the same.

1 hopper isn't enough? You mean, you need to be able to record more than 3 shows at once?

If you go to the Dish forums and look up a DIRT member, I think they'd be able to help you get a 2 Hopper setup with no Joeys.

Many have gotten 2, even 3 Hoppers. Just ask your local installer. They will do what you want.

You have 2 options to fit your needs:

1) @ $200: 1 HMC and 1 HD/DVR
2) @ $100: 2 HD/DVRs

Option 1 will let you record 5 on 1 TV and 2 on the other. Option 2 will let you record 2 on both.

I suggest setting it up online to save the S&H fee, as well as HMC CSR confusion.

If one of the TVs is small and portable enough to move from one location to the other during installation, call them back and tell them that you have four, and that you want two Hoppers and two Joeys.
When the installer gets there, simply tell him that you are going to move the TV as needed for him to get the installation done, and that you will be buying the additional set later on.

This is exactly what I did so that I could have rotate a TV between my office and a spare bedroom if I should happen to have a guest who wanted TV.
There has to be a TV at each location during setup, but after that, it doesn't matter.

The HMC needs a swim system,so that is no cost, they will throw in internet connection kit as well as the dish.

You can get 3 H25's for free.

Total $99-$199 depending on your setup.

If your Credit is fair, like mine is.

Option 1
You still get the HMC for $99 and 3 H 25's will be $49 each.( Maybe another $50 credit) : Total $197- $246

Option 2
The HD DVR will be $149 and 2 H25's will be $49 each (You may get another $50 credit) ( I only got 2, so I switch an H25 for a D12.)
Total $297 -346 Plus taxes if you have any.

Bad credit count on paying full lease cost, But you may still get the HMC for $99. They may require you to pay a 100-300 dollar deposit as well if its really bad.

Since you only need 3 rooms, your looking at $99-$199
Again though if your credits good, and you think you want a 4 tv, you better get it now, or its going to cost you $149 for a receiver that is free now. Just a Thought!

Your best bet: 1 HR34 and 1 HR24. She will be able to record and also be able to watch recordings on ur HR34. I just got my son to switch from Dish to DTV. He got the 34 and an H25. Now wishes that he had the HR24 vice the H25. Just my 2 cents.
