Dish vs. Direct on HD Locals

I live in the Grand Rapids, MI market area. Direct TV has started broadcasting the locals in HD. Why can't Dish. Is it a question of dollars or Sat. space?

i've asked similar questions. i always get the answer of money. there is no money in it for Dish so they would rather fill the airs with channels they can charge for.

i don't agree personally. i think its essential to get HD locals. espiecally if you like NFL. something i didn't realise until i got my dish was that i couldn't get local hd. now i have to get anntennas installed and really get on the nerves of the housing assoication busy bodys. If I got cable I woudl have got local HDs. They will lose business in Indy because of things like this.

I live in Detroit, and DO get the locals.. but I will tell you.. who cares!! if you are in the Metro area and can pick up locals with Rabit ears (or amped antenna) DO IT!. in detroit, we get 2, 4 and 7, 62 and I think 56 in HD, but 56 has 3 DT channels, and we only get 1 from dish, 50 does not come in HD at all and 36 either (I could care less about that "private" station but other do care about it).

to put all theos station in HD it would be a waste of time for D* or E* so it almost makes it useless..

if you are in the middle of noware, and get the waivers then thats your best bet, but like i said. I think Dish could save money not doing locals, and suppliying an Amped antenna for free..

but i dont know enought about there footprint to confirm that.

just an oppinion..

You can always rent a mailbox in an area where desirable locals are fed then use that as your mailing address. You can then qualify for the locals.

Good way to get around sports blackouts too.

Unfortunately, Grand Rapids has the worst of situations. We are in an urban area so we can't get waivers and our stations are spead out so it takes putting multiple antenna segments together with a jointenna in order pick up some stations, like our PBS station - WGVU. Also, our CBS station, WMMT, is assigned to channel 2 in the VHF band and, as such, is very difficult to pick up without issues. The only away around all of this is to get HD via satellite or cable.

ahh.. i understand.. like I said, I had no research, so i just guessed. And I understand your situation.. Belive it or not Detroit is no great either, with all the DT stations all the freq's are all scattered and some of the stations that share the same tower (the one in southfield) still get all messed up. Wonder if DT comes over on basic cable if you have a DT tuner (i.e. the one on the vip2/411

The DT on Digital cable is totally different format. It doesn't use the DBS or OTA versions of digital.

Sounds like people who deserve to have their nerves gotten on. Once you put up your legally allowed antenna, you'll have not one but two new sources of entertainment.
