Does dishcomm server any purpose other than linking the phone line between multiple receivers? I have a 612 and a 211k but both are on UPSs. I was wondering if I should take them off the UPSs to take advantage of dishcomm.

Thanks,

Ken

If you have a DSL/cable-modem or some other high-speed internet service, then you can connect one of those powerline-to-ethernet adapters at your router and the Homeplug technology built-in to the ViP receivers will also allow them to get an IP address and download some Dish Online content as well as connect to Dish via internet instead of the phone line.

There are some UPS/power strips that say on them they are HomePlug-compatible. If so, then you can... If not, then its a big YMMV on that. You can always try and see... there is a menu item to allow you to test the DishComm communication between the receivers, and of course to see if the receiver gets an IP as well.

Chances are, however, that you'll need to plug directly into a wall outlet for best results.

Nope, it won't work with my UPSs. I prefer to have the receivers on the UPS, so I'll forgo dishcomm.

Ultimately it depends on why you want the UPS. IF you are actually using it for the battery backup capability, then you either have to forgo the DishComm OR check around for a UPS that supports HomePlug connectivity.

IF you are only using the UPS for surge-protection/lightning-arrest capabilities... then you might want to take a look at the HomePlug 1.0 specs, which is what the Dish ViP receivers are constructed to meet. Because of the nature of HomePlug using the power lines as a network connection and the intended direct-plug into a wall outlet, HomePlug specs call for surge-protection to be built-in to the power connection. If you check around you might find that the HomePlug specs are even better than your UPS in terms of rated protection.

Or you might not.. or you might just be disinterested in the whole concept by now.. but I figured it was worth mentioning in case you didn't know.

The Dishcomm service also lets you download video on demand from the internet connection to your hard drive. Dish Network has a library of movies you can choose from, and for $3.99 download to your receiver. I thought it would let me link two receivers to the Dishcomm server with one internet connection, but that does not seem to be the case unless I am doing something wrong.

I'm trying to use Dishcomm on my two 622s so I don't have to have a phone line running across my living room. However, it looks like the two outlets my 622s are directly plugged into are on different boards/breakers in my fuse box.

Is this the likely reason my main receiver does not 'see' my 2nd receiver. Is there a way to get around this other than a lot of wiring? Thanks.

Can someone explain Dish comm and is main features? I am assuming 2 receivers communicating over powerline interface (built in, right?) allowing them to communicate ppv back without phone? would they share cid info from one with phone?

HomePlug is a technology built-in to Dish receivers that allows them to acquire an IP address and connect to the internet through your gateway/router if you have a HomePlug adapter at your router. Through this connectivity Dish can "phone home" for things like PPV collection.

DishComm is a companion built-in technology that permits the Dish receivers to communicate directly to each other (not via IP or internet). Currently about the only thing this give you is the ability to connect one receiver to a phone line, and allow other receivers in the home to use that same phone line without running one to each receiver.

I have DishCOMM setup and working. The CID function does work on both receivers just fine.
