Do I understand this right?

Hello, here's a question from a newbie. I just got Dish Network with the ViP722. I have one HD and one SD TV. I got this DVR based on the recommendation of the CSR, because they conveyed that it would function pretty much like having a DVR for each TV. But it doesn't seem that way at all.

If I'm understanding this right, we can't be watching different live TV programs on each TV and record even one other program (Note that I don't have an OTA antenna). Is that right? If that's right, it seems like this DVR/receiver functions like having a receiver but not DVR for each set (like if both TVs are in use with live programming) or it functions like having a DVR for one set if the other set isn't in use. It certainly doesn't seem to function like having a DVR each place.

Maybe this is a useful set-up for some people, but for us often both TVs are simultaneously watching live programming, and we also want to be able to record at least one thing while doing that. I guess it may be time to just get another DVR, but I'm disappointed that the advertising on the price was a little misleading. Oh well, not a big deal, it will still be worth it I think as compared to what I had with TWC.

Thanks for any feedback.

I may be confused here but you should be able to watch a saved program on each tv while simultaneously recording up to two new programs, correct? If so, watch saved programming and record new ones to your heart's content!
The 722 has three tuners. There are two sat tuners and 1 OTA tuner. Without OTA you are left with only two sat tuners. In order to watch live TV on 2 TVs and also record 2 programs all at the same time, you would need 4 tuners in the single box. To do what you want you will need two 622s/722s/612s.

If you had an OTA antenna you would add one tuner which would give you the ability to watch/record one additional program.

Not the issue. The OP wants to watch two live shows while recording two different shows. No can do.
Thanks for the confirming information, folks. Looks like I'm going to be ordering another DVR.
Yep - get another DVR. I refuse (always have) to split my DVR to 2 TVs. I want (at least) 2 tuners for each TV - so always run mine in Single mode. That's why I've got a 622 and 722.

I'm with you, I never watch anything live anymore and that includes sports. :) Why would anyone want to waste time watching commercials?

krupina, hook an antenna up to that box, your wasting your third tuner/recorder.

same here. i NEVER watch live TV except inbetween starting delayed/dvr'd programming :)

my kids watch live tv (nick) but for me, even the olympics, i'd set one tuner to NBC, hit the pip swap button (for the newbie, this switches to the other tuner even though not in pip mode when box is running single mode) so NBC is now the unseen tuner as is being live spooled, then i would watch some recorded show. When that was done, I'd swap back to NBC to see what was on, and if something interesting, I'd rewind to the part I wanted to see, watch that portion, then go back to something recorded. (note to newbies, if you want to do this, the channel you want to be able to spool can not be the one you are watching when you start to watch the dvr program. never understood that, but when you watch a dvr'd program, the tuner that was last active doesn't continue to spool, only the other tuner does).

I don't even watch the NFL live anymore :) Dish's DVR is too perfect, i just wait 30-45 minutes after the start, then start watching. I skip commercials and most of the halftime junk, and usually I am live by the end of the game or within minutes. And, if the game is really bad for my team, but I still want to see it, I can hit the 30 second forward skip button when a player is tackled, and the offense is usually lined up about the hike the next play. I can watch a whole game in about 70 minutes if I want to wait until it's about an hour from the expected end :)

Just get the 2nd DVR, you'll never watch live tv again :) haha. I don't even watch shows like Idol and Dancing with the Stars live, I start them a little after they start and usually get done a little after they finish if I intend to vote. I even let the finale get going 30 minutes or more so I can skip the commercials and boring parts :) haha

btw, DVR has ruined my life!! I watch too many shows now hahahahaha
