I'm curious how many other cities that DirecTV has fired up their local into local HD channels are having the '8mm' problem. If you don't know what this is it's been likened to watching old 8mm home movies, the motion is not smooth/fluid, it has a stutter to it. Others have noted that it's like a frame rate problem, doesn't look like 30fps but something lower.

I ask since when I was in Chicago I never saw this problem. I'm now in Austin, where D* turned up the HD LIL's a few weeks ago and the two 1080i stations have this issue whenever they show video/30fps based programming, file/24fps based material looks OK, the one 720p channel is OK with all sources.

I've reported this problem to D* and their response is that their broadcast center has said the problem is corrected in Austin, so it must be my end of the bit stream and they sent a tech out. Tech verfied that everything is OK on my end and does agree there is something wrong but nothing he can do to resolve.

So how many other cities are still seeing this problem? It's been reported that D* has fixed this problem in some cities and just curious what cities are still having the problem. Thanks

Its a problem here in Cleveland too. They HAVE corrected it with the NBC local but the CBS station is still having problems with the MPEG4 stream. However now on the MPEG4 Fox station I have a lip synch issue.

Wow... I'm glad I saw this. It sounds EXACTLY like what is happening here in Memphis. Currently, of the three stations broadcast in HD by D*, only one is in 1080i (WMC-TV, NBC affiliate) and it has this exact problem. The other two are in 720p and the picture quality is comparable to the OTA PQ. The Comcast HD broadcast feed does not seem to have this problem.

These three Memphis HD locals have only been up for about a month; in the beginning, there didn't seem to be a problem, but for the last week or so, the 1080i station looks like crap.

Put Memphis on the list.

We have the same issue here in Austin, the FOX stuff loks great - the rest stink. The same local HD channel's OTA are perfect. Its something between progressive VS interlace and MPEG4 - I will let the D* support team debug it from there.

Memphis here too...

I have seen the 8mm bug, but it is not limited to MPEG4 locals for me. I have seen it on MPEG2 HD (Discover HD while watching American Chopper) and SD (CBS/WREG SD while watching The Unit) as well as MPEG4 HD (FOX/WHBQ HD while watching House).

It looks to me like the hard drive in the HR20 can't keep up and drops frames.

Maybe we're seeing two problems that look similar to one another. One with the HD locals at the local transmission stations and the other with the HR20.

Just a thought.

This is a problem in Boston, agian sporting events on CBS and NBC. FOX & ABC are fine! OTA is fine on all 4! Problem on both the H20 & HR20!
Ditto. The 1080i stuff has the problem not the 720p channels. NESN HD has the problem.

Happening here in Philly. From day one with my H20 a few months back, and now with the HR20. Very weird to watch, very annoying. But not ABC affiliate or fox (720p). Only CBS and NBC, especially during sports or Letterman.

Philadelphia locals have been a problem from day 1 for CBS, NBC and CW (all
1080i). ABC and FOX are fine (720p). Regular shows look great, football is unwatchable because of the stuttering. Hope they fix it before the NFL playoffs.

I have this problem in INdianapolis too. All my mpeg2 HD channels work great, but NBC/ABC both have lip sync issues. (Though ABC seems to be a little better).

Of course what REALLY sucks is when the engineer forgets to flip the switch after commercials and we get both the 2.0 and 5.1 audio creating an echo. Yes, WTHR-DT I'm looking in your direction.....

Baltimore locals have this problem. Unwatchable for football on NBC and CBS when broadcast in 1080i.

Orlando here ..

I notice it more on the NBC affiliate. It is constant, and especially noticable during football games. I notice it at times on the other locals, but NBC is definitely the worst.

Lip synch is a problem on almost ALL D* channels on the HR20. It's a problem on the mpeg4 AND the mpeg2 channels.
