No, but it makes things much easier.

With BBCs you need to move the BBC before the diplexor, and therefor diplex and BBC each line individually that needs the OTA (or cable?) signals.

And... the most recently announce receiver, the h23 does not use BBCs, so the ONLY way to diplex OTA with that receiver is via SWM.

I just reinstalled my Slimline using a SWM8 and love it.

Heres how it went:

Slimline on pole about 10 ft from house
4 cables from dish to SWM8 mounted on exterior wall
One cable from SWM8 to exterior coaxial junction, tied into cable heading to my living room outlet
In attic, plugged in the power inserter, attached the cable from the outside junction and attached the cable continuing to the living room
Right after the PI, I added a diplexer and tied in my OTA.
Behind my tv, I have another diplexer with one cable out to the HR20 tuner 1, and the other out to the OTA tuner.

Works great

Obviously Im going to have to pick 1 up b/c I dont think my installers will have one. Barring LOS issues, I wonder if I should get the SWM switch or the LNB with the built in switch. They both can be had for about the same price. Any pros or cons to one over the other?

Did not think the LNB was out yet, surprised itd be as cheap as the SWM8.

Expandability. I could not make it with a SWMline, with as many receivers as I have.

If you think you will eventually get more than 4 receivers (and all receivers are DVRs, aren't they? ) then I suggest getting the SWM. It also is easier for diplexing.

I realize there are many situations where 4 or less receivers is very realistic, so the SWMLine is very clean and compact for those cases.

Beyond that, nope no difference.

Slightly off-topic, but I thought a SWM allowed one to get rid of their BBCs?

It does. That's why SWM was mentioned as the only way to diplex on an H23.

Oh! I thought that was because the BBCs were built into the H23... which means no way of putting them before the diplexor... and didn't have anything to do with the SWM.

That is it exactly, a heads up that if one has a hope to use diplexing with an H23, one has to go with SWM technology.

Best is to run extra coax wherever possible.
