Last week I ordered an HD receiver (I currently have two HD DVRs) from the D* website. When I attempted to install it today, the thing would not power up. DOA. I called D* and they are sending a replacement that they said should arrive Wednesday.

Is this rare or does D* have quality control problems?

<scratches head> You have been a customer for like 12 or 13 years right? Is this a rhetorical question?:confused:

I've probably had about 6 or 8 refurbished receivers/DVRs over the years. I had one, an H20, that came dead on arrival and would not even power up. It's replacement, another H20, worked fine for about a week. Then, it died. More recently, I had an HR21 that, when I got it, would only accept some remote commands and would not display all of the available resolutions that my 1080p TV was capable of displaying.

I've wondered how thorough the refurbishing process is. I suspect that, especially if an issue is intermittent, problems with returned equipment are not always detected and that it may well be that some units are sent back out with the same issues they had when they came in.

I had one bad replacement HR. Not totally dead. It had an Access Card that would requiring a call to DirecTV every morning to reset it. By the third day, they had enough. They sent a new receiver and card.

That was several years ago.

Since they are sent to Memphis when you return them maybe it's the BBQ sauce.
The BBQ Sauce they serve in Memphis is what dreams are made of on baby back ribbs and beef and chicken and deer and rabbit and possum. The stuff they serve in Texas sucks, along with Nor Lina crap. IMHO.

In the last month I had one D12 with a bad modem and two HR24-500's with issues. All refurbs. A lot depends on what the previous tech puts on the toe tag.

Quite rare.
I don't think so.

Their "refurbishment" program seems to be to plug it in, turn it on, and toss it in another box if it powers up and works.

I have received SEVERAL receivers that were DOA. In both cases, the connector on the back where the line cord plugs in wasn't making contact with the internal circuitry and wiggling it would get the receiver to work. Apparently it was in the "right" position when it was "refurbished".

When the second one arrived with the same problem, I took it apart and resoldered the connector to the circuit board. (This was in the days before leased receivers so don't bother lecturing me about how doing this violates their TOS)

Yes I've been a customer for a long time, but I don't change out equipment very often. I was just wondering if I hit the bad receiver lottery or if this is a common problem.

Not quite.

Some are less tested than this, others are tested MUCH more thoroughly. It all depends on the 'classification' ;)
