Does activating an owned receiver extend your contract?
I am livid with DirecTV right now as last year I added a HDDVR that I bought off of ebay. Because it was an owned receiver and not leased, D* made me buy a new access card for $20 which was annoying but I did it. They told me when I activated the receiver that I would not have to agree to a contract since it was owned, I have been out of contract for a few years now.
Tonight I called looking for the free Sunday Ticket with 1 year contract deal and they told me I am in the middle of a two year contract that started when I activated my receiver. This is the opposite of what they told me last year and I am extremely angry about it, is there anyone here or higher up at D* that I can talk to?

I know it's the principle and making sure the box is marked as owned, but as for the contract, you'll basically end up where you are now contract wise.
Just because you bought it off ebay doesnt mean that it was owned. If the receiver and card had never been activated then it is leased period. The DVR I bought had been activated and used by the previous owner. The CSR I talked to agreed that my receiver was owned and not leased, he just said it didn't matter and that a new 2 year contract had started from the time of the activation last year. Is there a separate number for the access card department or can I get there through phone prompts? I am thinking I need to try CSR roulette some more at the very least.
ACT would never have sold him the access card if the receiver was leased. Wait...wrong...you can buy a card for an HR that has never been activated. DirecTV screws up the owned/leased status all the time.
One of my R15's magically became "owned" after I made some changes to my account even though I got it from DirecTV in 2007-long after the leasing program started.
It's actually a negative since if it ever breaks down I can't get it replaced for $20 since it's now "mine". But on the positive, if I cancel DirecTV I can sell it.
On the other hand, my other R15 is still leased so if the HDD or power supply in my "owned" R15 fails guess what's going to happen?

The access card team got my DVR switched over to owned OK but I am still somewhat mad as they say a H20 I got in April of last year started a new 2 year contract so I can't get the NFL deal. That doesn't seem right considering I only used it for 6 months before deactivating it and they care so little about the H20 that they don't even want it back, but I admit I may have forgotten about that contract detail. Thanks for the help everyone but I have one more question, is it standard for just a receiver to start a two year contract, I thought receivers were one year and DVRs were for two?
HD receivers and DVRs (both HD and SD) are 2 years, standard receivers are one. So a H20, R16 HR34 etc is 2 years, but if you add a D12, that's one.
Thanks for the clarification, looks like I'm stuck with a contract for another 9 months but it's no big deal since in my area there are no other good options.
