Does Dish have a (free) channel similar to Direct that lets you download karaoke songs on demand? There are similar threads, but they are really old so I don't know if things have changed since then.

No.

Most people I know buy their own separate karaoke machine.

DISH offered a channel a few years ago via Channel 100 DISH Interactive. It looks like the channel quietly went away (possibly February 2nd, 2011).
