Usually it is indicated in the shows Info. Also a lot of receivers will indicate if it is receiving a DD signal or not.

how can I tell whether an hd show/movie is in 5.1 or not?
The only way to know for sure is if your correctly connected AV receiver says so. The satellite receiver itself does not indicate one way or the other.

Your audio/surround sound receiver should indicate what it is seeing (hearing) in regards to 5.1 or otherwise surround sound encoding.

Not all 5.1 mixes are created equally, even when indicated as such... and not all HD is 5.1. Some channels or programs are Dolby 2.0.
